Trouble Fitting a MagnaClean 2

Good evening all,

Prior to fitting my new rads, I had planned to fit a MagnaClean 2 to remove any gunk.

However as you can see, it seems I don’t actually have enough space to fit it, and service it (removing the magnet from the casing).

The MagnaClean 2 is 200mm in height… so ideally, I would need a minimum of 410mm.

Any suggestions?

Even if I could fit it in the loft space, I don’t really want it there.

Perhaps in the airing cupboard?

Alternatively, would an Atom (also by Adey) be a better solution? Not read or heard much about it. Seems like a smaller version of the MagnaClean 2 (maybe less powerful / not as good?).

Thanks.

I've got the MagnaClean Micro 2 - only about 150mm in total, fitted within a 350mm space above the boiler. Works well, you will have plenty of space for that.

Can anyone here confirm how much actual headroom the Mag2 requires? The lid/magnet assembly doesn't need lifting straight upwards all the way for removal, but can be tilted sideways.
Which of these pipes is the return, LWM?

That would be good to know!

The right pipe is the return.

    Thanks ComicGeek.

Hadn't realised this even existed! Noticed it too has a 10-year guarantee too, like the MagnaClean 2.

Is it effectively just a smaller, less powerful (e.g. it collects or holds less magnetite) version of the MagnaClean 2?

I have the earlier 'Magnaclean Professional' which only has the top lid, and not the bottom drain. It's around 195mm overall length, and only 280mm with the lid/magnet removed far enough to easily take it sideways.

Worth calling in to a plumbers merchants and asking if you can check the newer type out? Bring a tape measure...

Similar to the above, I have an original Magnaclean and the only place it could be fitted was under my bath, and even then it's sitting a 45 deg angle.
  • Thankfully, Adey actually state all the dimensions of their products on their website. But, don't seem to state the clearance required to remove the filter (to remove the magnetite). They only state the clearance required to bleed the valves.

I think I have two options...

    1. Fit the MagnaClean Professional 2 to the return pipe in the airing cupboard.
    2. Fit the MagnaClean Micro 2 to the return pipe above the boiler.

What was the picture you posted above, the airing cupboard or above the boiler? If the airing cupboard is more accessible then fit it there.

Also, bear in mind the new Magnaclean have a quick release fitting so it can be removed from filling loop to clean if you don't have full access but you will have to drain it first.

Digging around for older installation instructions, the clearance above the Magnaclean Pro is 250mm, and the Micro, 170mm.
If you go for the latest version with the quick release mechanism, you can get away with 50mm top & bottom. When you need to clean the filter, slip a tray underneath, drain, and then remove the whole assembly. After cleaning out on the bench, refit and tighten up the quick release knob.
I'd be tempted to get some spare seals ( O rings ?) just in case the thing leaks after removal/refitting.

    Thanks FreeBear.

I can't see any mention of the quick release mechanism on Adey's website. That would be a godsend, if it does have that!
