Run flat tyres mileage
Hi,
I'm wondering if people have much experience with different tyre brands for run flat tyres.
I have an old 3 series (f30). When I first bought the car, it has some firehawk rft tyres which seem to last OK. Since that I went for the more expensive Bridgestone potenza S001 for the rear tyres. . Twice now I got 6k miles out them, while the front ones (firehawk) are still going after 20k miles. Now you will assume I drive like a lunatic, but I really don't. I drive 90% of the time with my two kids (toddlers) taking them to school or going to work. So never really doing more than 40-50 mph. And I obviously don't drift at car parks in the evening. The wear is also even, so no balancing issues.
Have you ever heard of anyone only getting 6k miles out of tyres? I will definitely change them, potentially go for something cheaper.

My Jaguar ate tyres. Mid teens at best, lowest was a pair of Goodyears which did 6,000 miles.

My wife's X5 ate tyres like no tomorrow. She chose the one with the low profile fat rear tyres so silly money for them. She was usually on Dunlop SP runflats0

The front Bridgestones on my 1 series have been going for almost 25k and still have around 4mm on them, the rears were changed at around 20k and that was only because one had a big cut in it that failed the MOT so I changed both rears at the same time.0

I will definitely change them, potentially go for something cheaper.I have had Bridgestone Potenza and currently Pirelli Centuro on my F30 (330D). I have consistently had around 18,000 miles out of a rear set of tyres. Prior to the pandemic I was doing over 25,000 miles a year, about 50% of which was motorway driving - so easier on the tyres.6,000 miles seems very low - are you on 19" rims?1 -
There is definitely something wrong there. I have an F30 on Bridgestone Potenza tyres (19 inch) and the tyres are currently on 37k miles. I expect I’ll get close to 40k from the rear tyres and the front tyres are only half worn.
It’s hard to point out what is going wrong though (the normal assumption would be driving style) as the wear wouldn’t be even if they were too hard/too soft/out of alignment etc.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Thank you. I did a detailed history of all my tyre purchases and mileage. Front ones I got 25k miles easily. Rear ones seem to go every 6k-7k miles. Both the potenza S001 and the firestone firehawk.
The problem is that its hard to compare as everyone seems to think I drive too fast, aggressive on the turns/roundabouts or acceleration, skidding or aggressive braking. I know for a fact that I don't. My wife would confirm. In fact, other colleagues of mine with bmws drive much more aggressively than me and seem to get 15k+ miles.
BMW dealership or the tyre fitter didn't seem to think there is anything wrong with the car, so I can only assume I drive it like an F1, rather than an F30 😂
Any recommendations for other Runflat tyres, other than the Bridgestone?0 -
Have you had it on a four-wheel alignment jig?0

What model of the 3 series have you got?0 -
It's a 320D. Wheels are the standard (?) 225/50R17
I never really floor it, definitely don't skid, don't drive in sport mode. I don't have big stretches of road either, 90% of driving is 5 miles or less. Half of it is with 2 kids in the back (1.5 and 4) Many starts and stops, many roundabouts.0 -
Bmw dealership said there isn't anything they can see wrong in the car. Tyre fitter said wear is pretty even, so no alignment issues. I'm sure the BMW dealer would love to charge me more
