I'm going to buy my first laptop (only had hand-downs previously).
So this is the first time I've had to learn about the technical specs.
I've been reading up on these, but what about other issues such as guarantees and customer service?
I read recently of someone picking up their laptop at a store and being forced to pay more for an "essential" extra.
So would it be better to search for a laptop at a store such as Curry's or John Lewis's, to iron out any issues before the purchase?
One such thing came to mind - do all laptops come with a power adapter, or do you have to purchase separately?
If most people are in favour of buying online, what sites are best to look at?

Hi,similar thread HERE might get some help.1

Laptops will come with a power adapter, no worries there.
I hear good things about John Lewis. I don't think there is a bricks and mortar store I can recommend for buying a laptop. I have had reasonable experience buying direct from Dell's website, including the Outlet Store:
https://www.dell.com/en-uk/dfh/shop/dell-refurbished/cp/outlet
Dell usually offer an extra 10% discount to first time outlet store customers. Although I can't find the link just now...
A dream is not reality, but who's to say which is which?1 -
I was going to buy new, rather than refurbished.

John Lewis are pretty safe -guess they still do 2 year warranties- but selection is limited and tend to be expensive. Dell are recommended. When you have a budget and basic specs (screen size and what you're using it for) ask on this thread.
Hot uk deals is a good place for deals ... https://www.hotukdeals.com/tag/laptop

Currys in my experience, try to sell you 'extras'I've purchased three Dell Refurbished - they are 'as new' and come with a 12 month guarantee.1

I'd warn you against buying from Currys/PC World as their 'Tech Guys' are more than useless if things go wrong with the device. Their dire reputation stretches back for decades. Unless of course their training has improved recently. As above, Dell are pretty good. But you can do your own research. Just type in 'best laptops 2021' and see what comes up and it depends on your budget and what you use it for.1

I bought online from a place in Yorkshire (Hint), and it failed. They wanted to charge me £50.00 for returns, something that i refused and contacted samsung on the spot. My lesson was learned. If it goes wrong you need to speak to a person, not the internet. I always go to Currys for that face2face. Only my experience.1

Margins on selling laptops are not great, in comparison to many other goods, and so a fair number of places doing face to face sales try and cross sell other products and services... classics have always been protective cases, mice, and a "setup" service. Stay strong and just keep saying no... there have been more than one occasion where people have turned down these things and then the company claims is too late as they've already run the setup but just stay on message that you dont want it and didnt authorise it.
Outside of that.. John Lewis are ok if you still believe in their name but expect to pay higher prices... Currys are terrible but convenient... Dell are reasonable but make sure you know about different processors etc as its easy to think you are buying a bargain but realise its just a very old model when you get it... Apple, not willing to open that can of worms today

I do know that they cannot charge £50.00. that was part of my gripe, but they were adamant. Hence why i got absolutely brilliant service from samsung. FanfareCisco001 said:
