I've had good experience buying both new and refurbished from Dell's website.

John Lewis are pretty safe -guess they still do 2 year warranties- but selection is limited and tend to be expensive.  Dell are recommended.  When you have a budget and basic specs (screen size and what you're using it for) ask on this thread.
Hot uk deals is a good place for deals ...   https://www.hotukdeals.com/tag/laptop
I looked at that link, but I'm not familiar with hotukdeals; are they people selling 2nd hand as on eBay, or people notifying you of a good deal?
There was a good article about laptops at the bottom of the link.

Currys in my experience, try to sell you 'extras'

I've purchased three Dell Refurbished - they are 'as new' and come with a 12 month guarantee.

I've heard that Dell are good quality and very robust. Does this make them heavy? This is a consideration, as I would want to take it travelling.

I'd warn you against buying from Currys/PC World as their 'Tech Guys' are more than useless if things go wrong with the device. Their dire reputation stretches back for decades. Unless of course their training has improved recently.
As above, Dell are pretty good. But you can do your own research. Just type in 'best laptops 2021' and see what comes up and it depends on your budget and what you use it for.
But does that limit you to just John Lewis if you want to go to a store to have a look?

I bought online from a place in Yorkshire (Hint),
My lack of experience means that I don't get the hint?

Margins on selling laptops are not great, in comparison to many other goods, and so a fair number of places doing face to face sales try and cross sell other products and services... classics have always been protective cases, mice, and a "setup" service. Stay strong and just keep saying no... there have been more than one occasion where people have turned down these things and then the company claims is too late as they've already run the setup but just stay on message that you dont want it and didnt authorise it.

Outside of that.. John Lewis are ok if you still believe in their name but expect to pay higher prices... Currys are terrible but convenient... Dell are reasonable but make sure you know about different processors etc as its easy to think you are buying a bargain but realise its just a very old model when you get it... Apple, not willing to open that can of worms today  B)
I'm getting the feeling that most Dell's are refurbished. Is that just because it's the MSE site?

Only if you buy from their refurb store, not from the main website.

After looking at advice on specifications, I think I need the following:

      Intel core i5 processor
      14 inch screen
      8GB Ram
      256 GB SSD
      Full HD screen resolution

I would also prefer a lightweight model for travelling.

Are there any important aspects I've missed?

I plugged these specs into dell.co.uk and it came up with just one laptop:

    New Inspiron 14

Is this a good example to compare with others?
