Kids can soon suck all spare and even non spare cash. I am trying to be stricter and set stronger boundaries in advance so that doesn't keep happening to me... I am trying to educate kids that their emergency is theirs unless genuinely in a no food or unsafe situation. Still a work in progress too...

That's a good point and something I need to work to. At the min she is dependant on us for a weekly living amount as her course doesn't attract funding and the little bit of wages from previous jobs she took with her will have gone by now (what she's doing was a very last minute change!). However with her passport finally found she can take up the offer of a p-time job she got the other week which should ease the situation.

Hurrah for the found passport! Enjoy the show with DD - but boo to the cost of half term parenting!
My DD is home again this weekend as a friend is having a party. Need to factor in food for her and BF but don't know when they will be eating here as they sometimes use those food delivery apps !

Well we enjoyed the play very much. DD met a (older generation)  famous actor on the train home. The costs of the day weren't too bad. Breakfast for two before we went was around £13 and filled us for most of the day and the snacks I'd taken with us filled the gap. However at the railway station in London, her phone (iphone though an old version)  was stolen from her bag, probably whilst I'd gone to the loo and she was engrossed in writing her UCAS statement - having got inspired with what to put whilst on the trip back. Sigh. We have found her an old phone to take back with her as she leaves in a few hours and will have to look into options.

Oh no Spendless, so sorry about the phone! That's just so unlucky, but glad you still had DDs previous phone for her to use. Glad you enjoyed the play and how exciting to meet a celeb on the train!

Sorry she had that happen - sounds expensive to sort. Perhaps you could set her the target of bank switching or similar to create her own extra cash to fund it.

Thanks. Her course doesn't attract funding though. Currently she has to live on what we send her. I don't know if that will be a problem with bank switching?

She has an offer of a weekend part time job but needs to take her passport in to start it and it was only found just before she came home.

She will take the passport in later today. She delayed her return home by a day because she just wasn't well yesterday with a bad cough (took a test - it was negative) and feeling rubbish. Last time she returned from our home feeling under the weather, she was in hospital with breathing difficulties later that day, so thought an extra day here would be better. I suspect she has a lingering  chest infection (and that's what it was when she went into hospital too) and needs anti-biotics.

DH has come up with some different options for replacing the phone. Current phone provider has offered a deal but there's also some refurbed options (re-furbed is what she's always had) from others.

We are reluctant to pay out more than we have been doing for her phone contract.  Any difference will need to come from her wages once she starts or what is left of her savings.  The phone was stolen but her own carelessness contributed to that (not taking a bag with her on the day and shoving it into one of the open carrier type bags I'd taken with me to put food and programs into)). A task I've given myself over the weekend is to go through all the bags I have and get rid of any ones that don't have zips. If they are of the shopper type then they will be put with bags that are used on trips to the supermarket only.

Let's hope she starts earning soon then. Horrible when your stuff stolen - a phone feels very personal these days. I also don't get the point of stealing them as I thought most could be locked down remotely now?

Yes it has been. Was same last year when she had her ipad stolen (same area, just not exact location), was locked down so no good to anyone.

Day of tidying beckons today. Tomorrow is D Day aka MOT day for my car. It is 16 years old next month. I have had it for nearly 7 years. If it fails and the repairs are expensive it puts me in a catch 22 situation, because though I don't want to replace when I'm not working, not having one severely restricts jobs available for me to apply for. (eg my last temping job the other week had no bus route to there).

We have talked DH and me and we are thinking the following scenario
upto £500 repair - we do this, accepting that it will probably only keep the car on the road for a further year. By that time though DS will have graduated and have found/be looking for work. Either way we won't be supporting him as a student. DD will have got onto a 3 year funded course or will be back home and working taking a year out before trying again, so our financial support will just be to one of them not 2 like currently.

Over £1K - Not worth it, that money could go towards another car.

That leaves a grey area between £500-£1K
