Is it worth buying Plasma HDTV yet, if so which?

Having read so much stuff, its coming out of my ears.
Mostly conflicting. The more I read the more confused I get.

No HD Standard yet set...Blah Blah...
Which 1080...768 Blah!
Poor black levels Blah!
Nothing being broadcast till 3006 Blah!

Whats the bottom line on this guys?

I would probably buy it from John Lewis (5 year warranty)

But I see Sets with them for £899, listed for £649 with other.
Yes I think they do price match.

I want around a 42inch in the above price bracket(s)?

Make? Quality? 100hz? which resolution? Pixels? Anything else.

Give me a spec check sheet.

Or sould I just stick with my 32inch Sharpe 100hz? CRT

Please help

Careful of the J Lewis pricematching. They don't honour it usually if it's a large price difference. My mum tried to do the same and only got a price match after writing a letter to the CEO.

Do you have a HD source? If not I'd stick with your old CRT until you do. A lot of HD sets look fantastic in HD but not very good at all in Standard Definition. Just buy a HD set when you actually need one. Alternatively if you really want one make sure you view SD on it as well as HD before buying.

...and if you're going to wait until there's enough HD content around to make it worth a change, maybe SED TVs will have gone into mass production and be available at a sensible price.

They look to be better in almost every respect that LCD and Plasma (if you believe Canon & Toshiba marketing, that is!).

Get a Philips 42" Plasma from John Lewis, you will not be sorry, fantastic picture and sound quality, even via SD sources.

They were £649.00 with the JL 5 year warranty.

    In your opinion.

All of the LCD's that I looked at had a diabolical SD picture, none came any where near the Plasma's, especially on fast moving shots.
  • If your getting a big TV, get a plasma. I was in the sony shop today in Milton keynes and they had LCD's running bluray and they all looked awful.
Nothing to see here, move along.

My parents have that Panasonic (we have the 50'' version). They don't have an HD box, only Sky+, but they still have a great picture. The blacks and dark blues are really excellent.
  • Found this site for advice on Plasma Vs LCD.

    http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/myths/response/

Basically they say 37" and above then Plasma is better. See site for reasons why.

Looks a genuine site with nothing to sell so no reason not to believe them.
