    HUMMUS RECIPE

    1/4 cup tahini
    1/4 cup lemon juice
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp cumin
    Garlic clove
    Pinch of cayenne pepper
    2 Tbs olive oil
Tin chickpeas or other beans (we like butterbeans - makes a softer hummus)
    Water

Blend tahini with lemon juice.  Add salt, cumin, cayenne, garlic and olive oil.  Blend again.
Add 1/2 tin of chickpeas/beans; blend again.  Add rest of beans and blend again.
    Add water to required consistency.
Taste and adjust flavourings - we usually add extra cayenne & cumin and sometimes lemon juice.
Sprinkle with paprika to serve if you like.

I've tried this recipe with smooth peanut butter instead of tahini but flavour is nowhere near as nice and also makes a much softer hummus.

Thanks for this recipe. I made hummus last week and despite eating the lot in 1 sitting, the texture was too grainy. I’ve been Googling and butter beans are a good alternative as you mentioned but also blending with a couple of ice cubes or shelling the chickpeas first. The latter sounds laborious but apparently pre boiling them for about 10 minutes with a pinch of bicarb helps too!

I’m going to try both as I love hummus with crackers as a snack.

I spent £22.63 on Friday in Asda.  Yesterday made a slow cooker veggie sausage casserole with a 20p stew pack and some 10p mushrooms, it was very nice and a portion is in the freezer.  I also did some spiced red cabbage with it and will some more for our tea.  I think there will still another portion left, cabbage does seem to go on forever.....

A very different far richer dal, the  Dishoom house black dal is beyond tasty for those who have not tried it in their restaurants but I have not tried making it at home,  but there is a recipe here if anyone wants to try. I will have a go myself but need the 'deggi mirch chilli powder' whatever that is and the urad dal. So many different kinds of Indian pulses and I am not clear on them all.

    NSD DAY planned
Deggi Mirch chilli powder aka Kashmiri chilli powder - available at T*scos, apparently not sure if you need a larger store for that - it's a milder version of chilli powder so maybe just use a bit less?

Re the urad dhal, apparently mung bean is a suitable substitute as they're related. If you have an ethnic grocer near you, they will probably have them both and be a lot cheaper than the supermarkets.

I was dog-and-cat sitting this weekend and fell off the coffee shop wagon completely Saturday, Sunday and today making a total of £9.90. Lunch today was £4.10 - lentil hotpot from the canteen as I wanted something hot. And this evening I popped into Morries on the way home and bought tomatoes, bread, milk and tinned tuna - £3.98. Which takes me down to £40.62 for the rest of the month.

I need to update from Mr t and home bargains at weekend but just wanted to document that after having not slept in over 36 hours I avoided the siren call of takeaway and put an oven pizza and beans on toast on the table tonight. We usually make HM pizza but I do think a frozen pizza is an essential in our frugal arsenal!

Ladywithaplan - I would really appreciate the golabki recipe, I have done a stuffed cabbage leaf recipe in the past but it wasn't very exciting!!!! Thanks.

No money spent today and my month ends tomorrow night as I get paid Wednesday, I always allow £15 a week as my pay periods are every four weeks and I still have quite a lot of food in which I want to use up, it never seems to go down I'm sure I have food fairies who come visiting whilst I'm in bed!!

And talking of bed I'm going up as I'm up early on a Tuesday to do my bit of dgs sitting.

@LadyWithAPlan - I bought black urad from my local Indian grocers a while ago, they also had white urad as well, both were very cheap at less than £2 for 500g I think.

I had planned to cycle over to W*rose with a list today but was stymied by the weather which has turned wet and miserable here so made a dash to Sains and M*rks instead.
I spent £7.54 at M*rks on 4 x radishes, 4 x s/s organic milk, 1kg f/f greek style yoghurt, 1kg carrots and 300g mushrooms and £4.60 at Sains on flyspray, scourers and rubber gloves.

That makes my new total £59.27 and my average daily spend £3.29 which isn't bad at all for this far through the month.

After a small shop at MR T and my community grocery collection, my total stands at £153.62/£350. Still got plenty in so should be able to keep the rest of the months shopping low.

After Mr Ts at weekend and circa £12.something at HBs, total stands at £140 - so £70 per shop, which should be fine.
