Money Moral Dilemma: Should I share the cashback I got for booking a holiday with my friends?

  • The deal was that you sorted out the booking and payment. Therefore it’s nobody’s business what you did and how you manage your accounts. As others have pointed out, if your friends wanted a part of cashback, incentives etc then they could have paid their own way, with their own cards or accounts. We regularly are in this position as our friends all know that we are ardent savers and will try to
use vouchers or cashback wherever we can. Our friends often give us cash for when we split a meal etc and we pay on our card. True friends will just accept this and they benefit when there are offers on that we share. I would be open about it if anyone asks but ultimately, it’s yours.
  • Throw it in the kitty money when you are on your first night out on holiday? Or keep it until you are all skint before leaving? And surprise them with the extra cash to spend? But definitely keep it until all goes well with the holiday and you are not out of pocket? Enjoy the trip whatever you do?
  • I agree with FlipFlop13 - the cashback is a service on your personal card.  I also agree that since you did the work, using your own finances, the perk is yours.  If it's a big group, don't buy a round as it will cost the same as the cashback and you deserve some benefit for your efforts and risk.
  • There's no right answer. I think all the options are valid:
    - Keep it
    - Give it to your mates
    - Buy a round of drinks and tell them
    - Buy a round of drinks and don't tell them

There are arguments for and against all of these, but I wouldn't worry with whatever you decide.

All of this over £60 and friends?

Personally I would get a few extra drinks in. No mention of the cashback or fuss, academic in the whole scheme of things.

For some, £60 is not academic I agree, but is probably all relative to the cost of the holiday in the first place
  • I don't think it matters, but it would be a great start to the holiday to surprise your friends with drinks or lunch.
  • You did the booking, you offered to pay upfront, you coordinated the paying you back, and the credit card with the perk is yours. So you can absolutely keep it.
You can also try to see it this way: imagine you go to a lunch with 2 more friends and there is a buy 3, pay 2 offer on a meal. Then, I guess you would agree to split that total cost of 2 meals over 3. But if there was no such offer and each one of you had to regularly pay for their meal and your friends had some kind of offer on their card that would result in them paying less (es. get £5 off at Nandos with Barclays bank or similar), would you expect them to take this into account when splitting the bill? I don't think so.
  • Try asking your friends, all together, what you should do with the money ( without reminding them that you earned it ).  If they say keep it, keep it.  If they say share it out, share it out.  If they leave it up to you, toss a coin.  Whatever they say, you will know them a bit better.
  • I think you deserve the cashback for doing all the work. You don't say how many of you are going, but as you sourced the best deal for them, you getting the cashback has not made their holiday any more expensive.  I have booked numerous holidays for friends in the past, and they are always glad that they don't have the hassle of doing it themselves!
My friends trust me to get the best deal (I'm known as being a bit money savvy!) and wouldn't feel cheated by this. Buy them a drink if you want to, but remember the cashback is not always guaranteed and could be a lot less when you (finally!) get it.
  • Definitely keep it! I’ve done this several times. You always end up out of pocket somewhere even if it’s interest on the credit card. Plus the effort and energy going into booking is a big pressure, you deserve the reward.
