I'm so sorry to hear about your fil, grief is a funny thing and doesn't have a constant but comes in waves. Be gentle to yourself and your family, it's okay to have arguments, to suddenly want to stop talking or to rapidly change minds about things.
Also the guilt is real, even if your wife doesn't have any reason for it.6 -
Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers, they are appreciatedMrs E and her family are meeting with a funeral director today, although the funeral is likely to be a couple of weeks away. Mrs E's mum has had a lot of practical and emotional support to get the house in order and start organising things. I have been doing what I can (mostly help taking down decorations, cooking for 8 on Hogmany and going round to help with a budget and list of assets and liabilities tomorrow). Mrs E is generally herself, with occasional blank spells where she considers the unfairness of it all. I am providing hugs and more help than usual with practical stuff.Although it all feels very superfluous now, our finances were actually on a tear last year, with an increase of c. £100,000 to our NW, all things considered. Multiple months with increases of over £7,000 helped, although there was a -£16,000 month in there just to keep things terrifying. Our increases don't feel very tangible at times (they include home equity, DB pensions and state pensions) and we often feel that our wealth is "in the wrong place". I can't say what our "strict"/portable increase was as I didn't track this in December 2022. I'm working to improve the lack of portability with more cash on hand and an Emergency Fund and this is now creeping towards £3,000. Considering the fact it didn't exist a few months ago, this feels like a real achievement12

Any EE is an achievement when one previously did not exist.
Am working on clearing CC debt then will look at an EE for self.
Other than that sounds all is as well as can be expected under the cirumstances.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!7 -
I have just remembered that even the significant increase we recorded last year is quite small in real terms. Assuming inflation IRO 10% for the year, we were up roughly 5% in real terms6
