No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

In a truly bizarre and devastating end to the year, Mrs E's dad passed away today after a very short illness. He was only 69. Mrs E is beside herself and thoroughly shocked.6

That is so awful ed. My Dad's birthday was the 20th December, and his loss, like your FiL, after a short illness (pancreatic cancer, diagnosed 12 days before he died) is always with me at Christmas.
