I'd much prefer Santander to have an additional 'nickname' field. However, since I already have a spreadsheet with details of all my accounts, it's trivially easy to add the payee reference number to that. The numbers are invariant, that is they don't change when payees are added or deleted.

Your bank permits you to do it, so you think it is reasonable for an organisation to require it of all their customers?

I simply said my banks allow me to transfer £25k in a single transfer. They also allow me to transfer any other amount up to £25k. What are you talking about regarding other organisations requiring it of all their customers? I said nothing about what amounts other organisations may allow.
    Here is the exchange:

However, having in the past opened a new account requiring a minimum £25,000 deposit, and no less was much more than the molehill you refer to!
I'm surprised by this. Many accounts will not be able to send £25k in a single transfer. Personally I'd accept a slighly lower rate from a more reasonable provider. But then again, if my current account provider didn't offer something other banks did, I'd open an account elsewhere, which you don't seem to want to do.
In answer to your question "What are you talking about regarding other organisations requiring it of all their customers?", it's not "other organisations", it is the one you referred to when you said "having in the past opened a new account requiring a minimum £25,000 deposit, and no less"
I was responding to your assertion that an organisation is offering new accounts that require a minimum £25,000 deposit to be made in a single faster payment. I'm surprised by this. Many accounts will not be able to send £25k in a single transfer.
You countered with: "My accounts allow me to send £25k with a single transfer.", which I took to mean you don't see it as a problem because it doesn't affect you personally. If I've misunderstood, please clarify your position on organisations requiring large deposits to be made via a single faster payment transfer with no flexibility offered to those who are not able to do so?

We so need a 'LOL' feedback icon in this forum. All we have is 'Thanks'.
  • Change banks then.

    Problem solved.
Yes, I opened a current account with Tesco Bank who have a fully implemented CoP system with the the required optional additional field they call "Nickname". This worked fine, but a month or so ago Tesco notified all customers that all current accounts will be closed by November.
Santander & Halifax could solve their problem by purchasing Tesco's proper implementation of CoP!

And you could solve your problem by using a different bank.

I do have some sympathy for the OP using Tesco and then having that account closed down, although I think that's always a risk with organisations for whom banking is not their primary business. Though opening one more bank account at a significant bank, continuing to use the other bank accounts normally, but funnelling savings account deposits via the new account would make life easier while the nickname feature remains unavailable.

I'm not being flippant by repeatedly saying this, I'm deadly serious.

If an organisation is not doing something you want them to and someone else is, stop doing business with them and do it with someone else.

Moaning on an internet forum will do nothing.
I think we are in complete agreement on what is a productive use of the OP's time. Voting with one's feet and complaining to those who have the power to make things better are the best options for someone who is dissatisfied with an element of customer service.

I repeat, I have in the past opened a savings account which required £25,000 minimum deposit. My current accounts allow me to make such a payment if I so desire. This is a fact -  I can only report my own experience and not that of other people. What's your problem with me giving you the correct facts about my personal experience?
I have not at any time disputed that. I have merely pointed out that not everyone is so lucky and it is not really fair of an institution to place such a barrier in the way of those who cannot move such a sum in a single transfer, so I am surprised that an organisation would insist on such a restrictive condition. You quoted that reply and responded to it. If your response is a mere statement of fact, then I fail to see the relevance. I did not state that nobody could do such a transfer. Like account nicknames, some banks would support such a payment and some would not.

AFAIK, the choice of banks offering a nickname for payees is limited to the Natwest Group - i.e. Natwest, RBS and Ulster. All three have automatic daily online/app payment limits per person of £5k, with the option to change this yourself to the max £10k.

But the "issue" is blown out of all proportion, anyway.
