TL;DR - payee nicknames are a handy facility for those who make lots of payments to themselves, but there's no requirement for banks to offer this, so many don't....12

TL;DR here, too
Just to say it‘s not a law, and that it’s your choice whether you ignore mismatches. If you do choose to do so, there are plenty of warnings about losing your money. It is impossible to proceed without pro-actively accepting or ignoring these warnings. If you choose to ignore those additional warnings, you should not be surprised if the banks wash their hands if you lose money. If you need yet more protection from yourself, perhaps you shouldn’t use online or app banking in the first instance.1 -
If another bank is offering this, why don't you move your account to them?6

With my Santander account I have used BOS1, BOS2 etc No problems with the account accepting it, I just ignore the warnings of dire consequences / sky falling in etc.

For Santander, I can set a reference which means I can see the difference between accounts with the same name. Can you not do this?2

You can set a reference which the receiving account shows but not the sending account, that only shows the name of the account it is going to which you can override, with warnings of dire consequences, in the case of multiple accounts in the same name which is the op's problem. The big problem is that there is no set way in how the banks handle it. If you want to make a payment to J. Smith some will simply state "does not match" whilst others state "the name on this account is Jane Smith". I had a problem trying to set up a payment to my granddaughter. She had her debit card with her so all the details were there - wrong - the debit card name was not the account name so we had to try all the combinations, Jane Smith, Jane B Smith, JB Smith, Jane Brenda Smith. Gave up in the end - Jane - job done !

I don't get it. You put what you want as the account name, the bank says it doesn't match, are you sure? You say yes you are sure and carry on.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.5

I don't quite understand the OPs problem with Santander. I have never been confused with who I was paying or who I had paid money to because the reference is always present next to the name or very easy to get to.1
