When sellers can’t/don’t let go…

Has anyone had sellers who pester them post-sale?

Viewed the house, and the seller told the estate agent to pass his number to us and for us to message him if we needed anything (this was after our offer was accepted). We were planning renovations, so asked to come and measure a couple of bits. He was very accommodating, but came across a little bit strange (in my opinion) however we got the measurements we wanted and all was good. He kept offering to leave some of his things in the house - but it was all awful junk and we declined. He seemed genuinely annoyed that we said no…

Fast forward, and we’d bought the house… he had his money… in my mind the cord has been cut.

We started renovating, and the weekend after we got the keys - I noticed him standing across the street watching us. Now he’d told us he was moving to a city 50 miles away… but there he was across the street watching us. He then came over and walked into the open hallway door and exclaimed ‘you’ve knocked down my wall!’ And expressed amazement that we’d ripped out his 1990’s kitchen. He started asking where the old dishwasher was and said ‘it’s a perfectly serviceable dishwasher!’… (it wasn’t, it was disgustingly dirty and probably at least 15yrs old). I said it was in the garden but he could have it if he wanted. He hung around a bit and then left.

I’d forgotten calling him to ask about sizes… and now he keeps calling me to ask how we are getting on and what we’ve ‘done next to his house’. I’ve stopped answering the calls, but then he started texting saying he hopes we are enjoying his house and he’s glad we are renovating it as he wanted to do it but never got round to it…

He turned up at the house again last weekend - claiming he was looking for an important letter. I told him we’d received nothing, and he asked if he could come inside to ‘double check’. I said no and assured him there was no letters but I’d let him know if anything arrives.

… so yeah, it’s just a bit strange and I can’t imagine being that way if I ever sold a house.

Anyone else had a similar (or worse) person who can’t let go?

funnily enough, yes! We actually bought new doors…

We got keys for the front door, and a bunch of keys that didn’t seem to fit any locks. Was only a few days after being in that we realised the patio door can be unlocked from outside… but we weren’t passed any keys. We’d been unlocking it from the inside turn-knob. A couple weeks ago my father in law said the door was unlocked when he came to do some work on the house, but I’m certain I locked it up. I wondered if the seller had been in to have a nosey at what we’ve been doing. We aren’t living in the house during renovations… there’s every chance!
  • Maybe you should get one of those Ring cameras to go inside the house for when you’re not there. If he is going in it’s a police matter. He sounds like he needs psychiatric help.

Was that the one where the seller refused to redirect his post then kept turning up to collect it and wanting to come in?
I would look for it but can’t be doing with the search function any more.
