@[Deleted User] the OP is adamant that when they took over the property both gas and electricity were with Npower.
Was he told that or did he actually check? In fairness to the OP, most people wouldn't check 'who is my supplier'. The scenario that his gas supply was switched to So at the same time as he initiated a switch to BG might be credible were it not for one key fact: that is, the gas account is now under a different name. Erroneous transfers happen all the time which is why there are regulations.

Putting that to one side, the OP has only himself to blame for not noticing this problem sooner. As BG would appear never to have been his gas supplier, then he cannot reasonably expect to be put back into the position that he would have been had So not taken over the supply. If any case is to be made that there has been an erroneous transfer then it would have been from NPower. The remedy would be to put the supply back with NPower and the OP would pay them as if he had never left which, as you keep suggesting, may not to the OP's financial advantage.

Possibly useful to the OP, from this thread:

The national database SHOULD have not only a record of who is actually supplying you, but if you phone them and convince them your enquiry is legitimate, will be able to track applications / rejections and objections. In my case this was key to unpicking the confusion. If your Supplier is Western Power, then they can be VERY helpful.
This might give some insight into who supplied the OP's property, when, and what switching applications were made?
