Nope, you can travel from Northampton to Portsmouth without using the tube, changing at Watford Junction and Clapham Junction, but thank you for illustrating why I've previously said we need sight of the actual ticket and the instructions from the relevant TOC to their ticket issuing staff to be certain. I wish I was clairvoyant like some...
Indeed - we don't know if the OP bought a ticket for a non-Underground route but assumed it was valid on the Underground because the conductor didn't mention it (or possibly didn't know themself).
I bought a ticket off the conductor on the train for travel through London that was by Underground I do not have a booking office at my nearest station and there isn't one within 25 miles(even further in the winter) I did not have time to order the tickets by post and mobile tickets aren't accepted by barriers on the Underground either.
The Conductor can only issue paper roll tickets, these were produced to every gateline and allowed me through by showing it to staff through to my destination as they do not operate ticket barriers. At Euston on the return I was told ''We cannot let you through as we don't accept those type of tickets'', I did challenge her as I wasn't prepared to pay extra just for a different format of ticket and do not think I should as I'd already paid the correct fare. She relented and let me through.
It's the format of the tickets issued that's at fault and TFL not providing the facility for Mobile Tickets or Paper Roll format to enter/exit there stations. The fault is not of the passenger. There is not a warning given by the conductor saying ''you will not be able to use TFL with that ticket and will have to pay again'' And why should I?
There are a number of lines and stations where buying off the conductor or by mobile is the only option if you wish to travel within five days. The TOC' and TFL needs to address this not the passenger at Euston.
If one has the time to buy exactly the same journey and ticket and have it posted but gets through London without hinderence then that's unfair. IT'S NOT THE PASSENGERS AT FAULT
  • This is the guidance issued to TfL staff on the subject last momth

So the Conductors, TOCS, Online sellers should be printing out a card ticket in edition to allow passengers to cross London in the same unobstructed manner as those with formats that operate TFL's barriers. The onus should not be the passengers to determine what format they should get there ticket in and as said it's not possible if you aren't near a ticket office or TVM.

@marmite1979 restarting your old thread from August 21 isn't going to get you any different answers on here now. Nothing has changed, and nobody else has posted in the two months previous to your posts today...

The useful information now @marmite1979 would be telling us what happened when you raised it with the TOC for selling you an invalid ticket?  Since it was concluded some months back that the conductor was wrong to sell you that ticket.
I need to think of something new here...

That wasn't the conclusion. The conductor MAY have been in the wrong but as there could potentially have been a valid non LUL routing, and the OP despite requests has never shared their ticket details or actual journey travelled, nobody knows for sure.

I agree regarding TOC complaint, but doubt you'll get proof of that either.

I'm assuming that marmite's statement of
I bought a ticket off the conductor on the train for travel through London that was by Underground
is true i.e. that's what they asked for.  So if the conductor didn't/couldn't issue a suitable ticket and didn't tell the passenger about alternative routing then it's either a mistake by the conductor or a gap in the TOC's processes.  I agree that we might not get a useful follow-up.
I need to think of something new here...
