Since setting up the new NAS yesterday, I have noticed that some of the folder icons in File Explorer are showing with two blue arrows. Does anyone know what that is?
A normal folder does not have any arrows.
I have attached images of a normal folder and a folder with the two blue arrows.

Means that the contents of the folder have been compressed.1

Thank you - I assume that means "no change" in all practical ways ?flaneurs_lobster said:Means that the contents of the folder have been compressed.0 -
Unless the files are enormous or your computer(s) are very feeble then the overhead/time to compressing/uncompressing the files will be negligible.
So yes.1 -
If the OP did buy the Synology DS223J, it runs the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system which uses the Btrfs or ext4 file system. Seems unlikely that NTFS is compressing files on the NAS; if the data was copied from a Windows volume with compression enabled, those NTFS flags can be inherited by the local cache or shortcut entries in Windows, even though the actual files on the NAS aren’t compressed.0

Even better, if that's the case then the answer to @Grumpy_chap's question is still "Yes".Vitor said:If the OP did buy the Synology DS223J, it runs the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system which uses the Btrfs or ext4 file system. Yes, I did buy the Synology DS223j and it is using DSM with the Btrfs file system.
It was actually very straightforward to set up, even for an amateur like me. I think I made three mistakes in the process:- Ran an "integrity check" which was not required but took hours
- Created one folder / virtual drive which was inaccessible but I was able to delete it easily enough.
- Unnecessarily followed the Synology process for mapping network drives
So far, all seems to be going well and it is a simple product with good security (two drives operating on RAID).
