Did the response answer your query or was it a *holding* response saying it would be looked into?0

I never said they won't be able to update you. What i said was, that you didn't email ESA as you stated you did.I can tell you that there's huge backlogs for assessments at the moment and you could potentially be waiting many months. You only sent your form 2 weeks ago and that's no time at all to be waiting. If your ESA claim was payments then you would be receiving £74.70 per week, which is assessment rate and is payable for a minimum of 13 weeks. If placed into the Support Group once a decision's made the extra money isnt' payable until week 14 of your claim. If it takes longer (and more often than not, it does) then the extra money is backdated. In the meantime while you wait, you should at least try to put it out of your mind and think about something else. Also to add that you should expect an assessment because most people have them. It will either be telephone or face to face. Once an appointment becomes available they will contact you.1

"Thank you for your email
I can confirm that your ESA50 questionaire has being received.
This has now being reviewed by a Healthcare Professional on 5th August and we have provided advice to DWP.
Your file will now been returned to a DWP Decision Maker, who will be in touch in due course.
I hope this information is of some help."
So CHDA do not make the decision - that is down to DWP
What, exactly is the role of CHDA ?

In this case it sounds like they're providing advice based on paperwork supplied...likely, but no guarantee, an in person assessment won't be required for a decision by DWP to be made.

As you've found they can be responsive to queries regarding their role in the process - such as giving basic updates on their progress in relation to assessing claimants. But they do not take the decision on entitlement and so the likely last update you will get if requesting information is that they've returned the file back to the DWP with their advice (as in your case). It is likely they've sent their report (unless they've found some barrier to providing assessment advice) which you should be able get a copy of from DWP (use ESA number on DWP ESA letters)... ESA85 if you had a 'proper assessment' or ESA85A if you had a paper based one.
As above.... they provide the same role as the 'independent' private companies that operate for the DWP regarding PIP.
