One colleague had a Mercedes that was £100k no idea which model. He thought that I must know so it was a bit embarrassing when I had to inform him I had no idea what he drove. Another had an M version of a BMW. He worked every Sunday for £1k a day. I stood with him working out how many Sundays he had worked to reduce his 0 to 60 time by a second or two. I think he was starting to realize it was probably a bit daft.

You understand that there's more to cars than a 0 to 60 time, right?

If he was making £1k a day for a Sunday shift, he could be driving a BMW M for 1 days work a month which isn't bad.

Why would it have been embarassing for him?

Its very rare a non car enthusiast would know or care about a performance variant.

I was selling something on Facebook a while back and a guy and his wife came out in a Golf TD.  He looked at my wifes Mercedes A45 and said proudly "we looked at those but instead we opted for the Golf as it had 10BHP more at 150BHP", assuming wrongly it was the diesel variant.  I didnt enlighten him to its 380BHP output.  I just smiled and nodded and took his money.

If he got pleasure from the M car then great.  He has plenty of time to drive some old cost saving diesel when hes retired. :)

A friend of mine was big in to M3s.  He'd change them every year or two.
That's probably just about the time that the front splitter splits ;)

It was embarrassing because he obviously thought that the whole workplace was talking about his car. I didn't know whether to pretend to know which would keep him happy or be honest and say I had no idea which is what I did. I am just saying buy what you want but don't expect other people to be impressed. I really don't think that many normal people are bothered how many BHP your car produces.

BUT the value for him is now - you are talking about his car many times after the event and creating a whole forum thread about him - famous or what?

    "Obviously"?

Given your condescending distain for people who dare to buy something thats better than what you have and the jealous rages we've seen you have on here, I cant imagine you werent very obviously showing it so i'd say he was most likely embarassed for you.

He seemed a normal enough guy otherwise - he just felt the need to share the BHP of his Golf over what he assumed my wifes was.

He clearly wasnt a car buff so as i said i just smiled and took his money.

    Indeed.

Tells us that nobody cared or noticed the cars, yet he cares enough to recall the event years after.   ;)

Seems like that guy being richer and younger than him got to him too.
