Don't say you didn't look at what you were signing though because this will suggest you admit liability. The error was made by them when they charged you twice regardless of what was or was not received.
I would seriously advise taking the time to write a letter as a phone call or email wil not have the same effect in suggesting how seriously you are taking the matter.
If their first reply to your letter is not favourable just keep writing back disputing what they are saying until they give you back what they owe you, if only to get you off their backs.
The problem with this method is that most people simply don't have the energy to enter into these (sometimes lengthy) correspondences, which is a shame because it just sends out the signal that these huge companies ca steam roller over anyone they like. Have a search for the thread "complaint letter successes" to give you some pointers about writing a complaint letter. Remember you can also offer to cancel your Argos card as a threat.
My feeling is that they won't want to lose a valuable customer and damage their reputatio and this should be resolved eventually. As I said earlier, its just a shame that this has involved a lot of stress for you.
If you're spending all of tomorrow worrying perhaps it would be worth ringing them to see how its progressed (and also to show you're not going to let the matter drop*)? Other people might advise you no to harrangue them though.
Edit: Also might be worth calling Office of Fair Trading's hotline/ CAB (consumer advice bureau, I think) and seeing where you stand legally. They're really helpful.
*I sometimes think they say they'll get back to you in a few days in the hope that you'll just leave the matter alone. I see no reason it couldn't be resolved in one working day. Thanks for the reply , I should hear tomorrow the outcome of the driver interview ( but seriously is he really going to specifically remember me from over a week ago as he has probably made tons of deliveries since then and admit to any errors and get into trouble if he has got my signature) Anyway i will have to get my writing head on if it not in my favour, but TBH this has all come at a bad time, but then again I suppose there isnever a good time for something like this to happen.
Anyway work kept me busy today so did not really think about it much but didn't get much sleep, They did advise me that due to having to interview the driver then they would not be able to get back to me any sooner as basically they have told me they have a signature for me signing for the goods. This is a do-it-yourself test for paranoia: you know you've got it when you can't think of anything that's your fault.Robert M. Are they classing this as 1 order or 2?
If they class it as one order, the box/packaging, usually states:-
1 of 2 and 2 of 2.
If you still have the packaging it might be worth checking what it says on it. . Good Luck, just don't back down, and try not to let it get to you too much, difficult and stressful though it may be. Just stick to your guns. Polly~ What goes around comes around ~0 -
They are definately classing it as 2 separate orders, although I was only told I had one order, they have told me that there are 2 different order numbers for the 2 parcels they delivered ( although they only delivered1!) of exactly the same item.
Also I have noticed that at the time there was an offer on for £10 voucher for orders over £100 and they have only sent me 1 voucher !!!This is a do-it-yourself test for paranoia: you know you've got it when you can't think of anything that's your fault.Robert M. Hutchins0 -

Just to say that this is not always true. After reading this thread yesterday I had a delivery from tesco direct. A very grumpy delivery man banged at the door, said 'i've gorra load a parcels for ya from tesco' then walked back to his van to get them. When he brought them in I took the time to count them (even thoough he looked really peeved when I did) and then when I went to sign (on one of the hand held ones)I looked and there was nowhere that stated the parcel number at all. I said do I just sign once then. He said 'yes' and then marched back to his van.
Just thought I'd mention it as if yours was the same then you would have no way of knowing what you'd signed for. I thought afterwards he could have only delviered half my order or given me other peoples and I have no idea what I signed for.
Dont know if this will help at all but thought Id mention it.
If you get no joy cant you just refuse to pay it?0 -
Thanks for that I still haven't heard anything, i gave them a call and they haven't had the details back from the depot yet ( re delivery ) i have asked for a hard copy POD but not sure if this will get me anywhere, said that they are very busy ( and I'm sure the driver is no-doubt overworked this time of year) so still do not hold out much hope as how is he going to remember my delivery specifically out of all the orders he makes. At the end of the day it is my word against his. Sorry to sound so negative. This is a do-it-yourself test for paranoia: you know you've got it when you can't think of anything that's your fault.Robert M. Hutchins0

The office I work in had a large Argos order they claimed was delivered and signed for that but we had not recieved. We filed a dispute with them and a while later it turned out the signature belonged to an Argos member of staff accepting them back into stock as couldn't be delivered! Took months to sort out though ..... Good luck in getting sorted.0

Can't you start a chargeback through your credit card?0

Any news Amelia's Mummy?
TBH I never check the amount of parcels on those electronic pad things but I do if it is signing paper as I count them.
The thing is if you are only expecting one parcel, why would you check?
I don't unless I am expecting several and then I do (and then only on the paper copy).
Good luck.
This sucks.
