I'd go about it the other way round - ask them for hard copy of the order(s) proving that you ordered two of the same item.

From what you have said, if the person who took the phone order was wrong and the internet order had gone through, then there will be two separate order numbers so two separate hard copies. If they were right and only the telephone order went through, they will only be able to produce one.

Once you have that information you'll know a bit better how to approach it.

Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.

I have to say that the same thing happened to my Ex partner with some games I had delivered. He signed for the parcels - should have been 8 in total, but only 7 were left. Because he had signed (and hadn't checked how many he was signing for) we were told there was nothing they could do. I suppose an honest delivery man would have noticed he had one extra parcel (if he did) at the end of the day.

As a result, 7 of the ps2 games that the insurance company were replacing, were lost. (we were burgled 2 years ago at New Year and all the boys new games were taken, along with their old ones).

Hope it turns out better for you.
  • Lesson of the story - never use your real signature on those machines - just do what I do - a meaningless scrawl. Any arguments and it's not your signature - if they aren't prepared to give you a bit of paper as your copy - then it's their look out.

I doesn't ever seem possible to use your real signature on those machines. I try but there lucky if they get a few lines on the screen.
  • hello,
iv had almost the same problem.i ordered a set of mugs from a bid tv channel, checked my account i saw the transaction made.but guess what no delivery has been made. i have called them every single day its frustrating repeating myself.but i wont give up.i hate them for stealing from me.im perservering, some good might come out of this misunderstanding.
    good luck.
  • If they don't rule in your favour then the next step is to write a letter to head office in which you state the dates (and times, if possible) of both orders and include any paperwork you have (always keep a copy for yourself though!) for example the print out of your first order. Don't say you didn't look at what you were signing though because this will suggest you admit liability. The error was made by them when they charged you twice regardless of what was or was not received.

I would seriously advise taking the time to write a letter as a phone call or email wil not have the same effect in suggesting how seriously you are taking the matter.

If their first reply to your letter is not favourable just keep writing back disputing what they are saying until they give you back what they owe you, if only to get you off their backs.

The problem with this method is that most people simply don't have the energy to enter into these (sometimes lengthy) correspondences, which is a shame because it just sends out the signal that these huge companies ca steam roller over anyone they like. Have a search for the thread "complaint letter successes" to give you some pointers about writing a complaint letter. Remember you can also offer to cancel your Argos card as a threat.

My feeling is that they won't want to lose a valuable customer and damage their reputatio and this should be resolved eventually. As I said earlier, its just a shame that this has involved a lot of stress for you.

If you're spending all of tomorrow worrying perhaps it would be worth ringing them to see how its progressed (and also to show you're not going to let the matter drop*)? Other people might advise you no to harrangue them though.

Edit: Also might be worth calling Office of Fair Trading's hotline/ CAB (consumer advice bureau, I think) and seeing where you stand legally. They're really helpful.

*I sometimes think they say they'll get back to you in a few days in the hope that you'll just leave the matter alone. I see no reason it couldn't be resolved in one working day.
  • i was just wondering... when you booked the first time and booked a delivery slot, did you request the same delivery slot the second time?

They have told me on the phone that I have a telephone order and an internet order with 2 separate order codes. I was quite thorough with them on the phone yesterday as I thought that it was just an admin error, so was totally shocked and went through every scenario on the phone.

I don't mean this in the wrong way but I am glad to hear that it has happened to someone else as when I called them yesterday they made me feel like a criminal and that I was the first person that this has happened to, however the fact that they have a disputed delivery section ( who they couldn't put me through to ) I suppose made me feel a bit better, but not much ~ looks like over £200 down the swanny.
