sounds like the phone has been blocked, is this second hand ??

You would need to go to the phone company and ask them to unblock the sim as it is the sim that has been blocked.

I had to block a phone and sim due to theft and Virgin sent out a new sim FOC with the same number and credit on it.

Sorry I understood that it was the sim that was blocked but now I read it again I realise the sim got lost with the phone.

In that case the phone is blocked and you would need to find out why?

i have a nokia 3510i and when i try to put int the p+w it just cums up with more stars instead of the p+w please help me

Yes there is,however i'm not going to disclose how to do it on an public board.
I'd suggest contacting your service provider for assistance on this as the IMEI may be blacklisted.
