I need your help! As usual!

If I wanted to eat less meat, what could I eat with mashed potato(!) and peas (!) what would be a veggie main?

I know I can eat other vegetarian food and will. It is what I used to eat. I am trying to just swap out one thing - the meat.... Any ideas? I guess I could eat fish...
Mash with beans & some cheese mixed in. Lush.

  • Cheese and onion pasties are easy to make but a meal in itself so probably wouldn’t need the mash! Vegetable pie... When I was at uni, I shared a house with 3 vegetarians. One of the dishes we used to cook was a pie that contained steamed vegetables that were then mixed into a basic cheese sauce and then topped with mashed potato. That was filling!

  • Why not make a shepherd less pie, lots of veg, whatever you fancy, cooked up with a gravy or cheese sauce and then topped with mash and served with peas.  I use onions, carrots, celery, beetroot, parsnips, sweet potato, squash, a tin of mixed bean or baked beans if you prefer....
Could I freeze it? So I could make  or buy a meat one for mum, then make that for me and do two meals......

  • I could never give up meat. I love it too much.
However, mash and peas is crying out for fishfingers in my humble opinion xxx
Good shout and something I can do!!

  • I don’t eat meat but eat some fish (no skin/bones/heads/tails 😆). How about veggie sausages and mash with caramelised onion gravy or buy some Quorn mince and make a cottage pie. If you like pastry you can get veggie versions of pies/pasties that would go well with mash.
Any recommendations on the brand of sausages please?

  • simplest thing is to have baked beans with your mash (and fruit, raw veg for snacks). When you have time look at some recipes using other tinned pulses and beans (you can soak dried ones but that takes time) chilli, curries and pasta bakes would be easy swaps - just add a tin of (whatever) beans instead of meat and lots of veg.
I might try and find a website of vegetarian meals for meat eaters, there must be such a thing.

Right now I am decluttering. UGH.
    Nevertheless she persisted.
  • Oh my goodness, giving up the big river shop is impressive. I’m in there all the time!
Fish in sauce goes lovely with mash.
So am I, it is going to kill me!!

Hi Buffy, delurking to recommend the Richmond veggie sausages, my daughter and I are both vegetarian and both agree these are the best we’ve tried 🙂

You will laugh but many years ago when I used to eat meat, I would only eat Bird’s tomato sausages. My mum had to take the skin off and remove the boingy bits before I’d eat them 🤣🤣 I was never destined to be a carnivore 😆
