    The NHS says this:

The app uses an algorithm to work out who gets an alert when someone they’ve been near tests positive for coronavirus.

The algorithm uses anonymous data based on Bluetooth signal strength to make calculations about risk. This is based on the physical distance between app users and how much time they have spent near each other. Bluetooth signal strength is reduced through walls and therefore less likely to satisfy the necessary criteria.

It doesn't claim it won't detect others' phones through walls or ceilings. Naturally, those vary in density. My daughter has had no contact with anyone with CV at work or at home, yet she was pinged last week. She thinks it was because she worked for some hours dressing a window between her store and a well-patronised eatery with tables only a few metres beyond the glass.

Reason why I didn’t download track and trace app is not suitable for those living in flats.

Bluetooth doesn’t recognise levels. So people are getting pinged when it’s actually for someone living above or below them.

My neighbour got tested positive in mid Jan. She’s not downloaded the app. A relative of hers got pinged after a client tested positive. That meant I would have got pinged end June.

You mentioned this in your opening post.
You had a very considered response here:

Where have you got your information that the app doesn't work properly in flats?

Many people are saying this but have it just seems to be based on rumours and not understanding how the app actually functions. The app doesn't simply just look at all Bluetooth signals and determine them all as contacts it also looks at the signal strength and any signal going through a wall will be very measurably weaker.

Also why would you have the app on while at home? You simply need to turn it off when your home and back on when out just like you should when your phone isn't with you.

Plus if you did get a notification to isolate then you can legally ignore it. So no real reason to not have it and delete it.

Do you have evidence that the T&T app doesn't work in flats?
Or are you listening to rumours?

Do you think it would be sensible to have the app installed but turn it off when you're at home?

so easy to forget to switch off the tracking when at home, just like putting phone onto silent when in a situation where to need to do this.

I refuse to download it as my employer is having staff shortages due to this. One less pinged employee. I am one who keeps forgetting to put my phone out of silent mode when Im at home, so chances are, I will forget to turn off app when I'm at home.

There is, and never has been,  any legal requirement to isolate if pinged by the app
So what was the point of it then? I thought it was a legal requirement hence why the government created the furlough scheme.
It may aswell not exist if people dont obide by it.
That said I just been pinged myself and faced with all sorts of problems. Mine being I deal with vunerable people, so surely I should follow the requirements, legal or otherwise?
    What is the bigger risk?
You actually having covid and passing it on to the people you are caring for?
Or those people you care for going without food because you are not there to prepare it?
Or trying to do something that you usually do for them and having an accident? Like leaving the gas on or standing on a chair to get something out of a cupboard?

That assumes that absolutely no-one else can feed these people (I believe the people concerned have a son who has not been pinged).

I don't believe anyone is really facing that choice.
There are social services, charities, churches, paid carers, volunteers and even their own son.
    I was not assuming anything.

That poster asked for ideas on coping after being pinged and having responsibility for 3 people on her other thread.
I offered suggestions on that thread.
    As did you.
As one of those suggestions I asked if there were adult children.
The OP of that thread has not responded.

I have not seen any mention of a son on that or this thread (although I may have missed it).

I have a few days booked off at work.

I know the deliveries at my work have been all over the place. Ambient delivery for Friday never turned up nor did it on Saturday. Not heard anymore. Milk, bar Cravendale and non cow milk (including lactofree) is delivered by the dairy. Those other milks mentioned are delivered as part of the fresh. The dairy delivery comes about 6:30pm.

The ambient delivery also includes the tobacco delivery. Customers are kicking off as got no Sterling rolling tobacco and other big sellers in the cig brands.

There's been a problem with supplies for some time, and gaps have been apparent for many weeks, but posts on social media accentuating demand haven't helped the situation now.
Some of us 'weird' folks have been stashing things away quietly since last year, but obviously only those that have a long shelf life and particularly when there have been offers.
I believe there's a prepping thread somewhere on MSE, maybe in Old Style. I've never considered myself a prepper, but fuel for next winter has been purchased months earlier than usual and I have enough barbecue charcoal to cook a whale!

Well it’s not really that important now but you said
”I have not seen any mention of a son”
    and I pointed to
“Hubby’s parents” - hence they have a son

I think sweetgirl has resolved her immediate issue.

Well yes, understanding that they are concerned about the essentials :-)
