We’ve actually found out over the weekend that the previous owners had a dispute with the neighbours over the same problem. There was no mention of this during the sale. Is this something that should have been declared??
More than likely, how did you find that out and who from?

In addition, consider when an argument would be classed as a dispute (does this need to involve authorities etc).

I had an argument the other night with a neighbour. He thought his music was at an appropriate volume, I pointed out it wasn't for 2am on a Sunday morning. Wasn't a dispute, it was an argument.

Gladly we do get on and he apologized the next day

Definitely start with a conversation and go from there. Police will not have the time/resource for personal use of cannabis particularly if it's within a home. They would also need a warrant to find evidence of growing which would be unlikely on the basis of x1 complaint and no other evidence (assuming no comings or goings from people at the door or vans being loaded at 2am etc).

A formal dispute escalated to the council of police or just a quiet word over the fence?

It was a dispute that was reported to the council. I spoke to the previous owners about it as they came to collect post. They mentioned that it had been an ongoing issue and they’d reported it to the council/environmental health and the police on numerous occasions.

Then they should have reported it on the property information form - there is a specific question about this very thing. Of course, if you push it they will prob deny it. Go through solicitors and request details of reports made. You may have some recourse.

Is the neighbour's house behind yours, or 'pon the left hand side?
