I agree with others that it is strange if you can only smell it outside.
They could be smoking next to an extractor fan so the smoke gets blown outside.

Reminds me of the time I went to Amsterdam and walked past the grasshopper, now that was a smell.

In case of any confusion, I was just window shopping in the area. o:)

All you have to do is walk out of 'dam train station for the 'fragrance' to hit you.

DId your window shopping take place from about 7ish till the early hours by any chance??

We’ve only just bought this house (moved in a month ago). We haven’t had much chance to get to know them or even chat.

Will start with that and mention it in passing - hopefully that will help!

    Thank you everyone

It sounds like these people are growing as regular smoking won't leave your clothes with an odour. There are 2 types of growers.

    1) One's who grow for 'percy'. Normally they mean no harm and a quiet word can normally rectify the situation. Police won't do anything if it's a couple of plants.

    2) Those who grow for profit. These people tend not to be approachable and don't give a damn. The police would be very interested in this case.

Work out which option it is and go from there...
Depends how efficient the for-profit growers are! If they're sensible, they'll hurry to install decent filtration - a police raid, or robbery by rival dealers, would cost them a lot of money compared to upgrading their kit. Some relatives had a big weed farm in a house on their terrace - never knew or smelled a thing until it was eventually raided... Lots of for-profit growers aren't efficient, though

I s the smell cannabis smoke,  or plants? If its the latter, then a call to Crimestoppers may be in order .

If it is smoke I would start with a polite conversation with the neighbours, and tsk t from there.

If they are just heavy smokers then I don't think the police will be interested, only if they are growing and/or dealing.
As a genuine matter of interest, is there a discernible difference in smell between someone smoking and someone growing?  How do you know which it is?

Yes, just the same there’s a difference in smell between tobacco and burnt tobacco. My grandfather smoked a (tobacco) pipe and I liked the smell of his old navy nut shag before it was burnt.

Have to say I love the smell of growing hemp. It's like aromatic nettles. Where we used to live there was a nearby farm that grew (legitimate) hemp for oil and the scent when you were walking past was fabulous. I find the smell of a burning joint a bit overwhelming these days (though there was a time when I was considerably younger than I am now.... :))

Yeah the smell is like a combination of pine resin, peppermint and basil/coriander.  Wouldn't want my home or clothes smelling of it, though!

We’ve actually found out over the weekend that the previous owners had a dispute with the neighbours over the same problem. There was no mention of this during the sale. Is this something that should have been declared??

The police won't be interested if it is only "personal use".

Politely mention the "flavoured tobacco" they must be using and i'm sure they will be more tactful about their timings of when they partake.

Worked with a friend of mine and his neighbour. (Friend popped there head over the fence and directly asked "What brand of tobacco is that? Smells really different").

As said before if the smell is strong enough to go on clothes, then they must be smoking a boatload of the stuff. Or growing it.
the police should be as possession, use, growing, supplying is all illegal.

You can report it to Crimestoppers or 101.

if you don't report it you can't complain that they do nothing.
Yeah, but in the real world, they won't do a thing for personal use.
