Cannabis smell from neighbour

A very very strong cannabis smell is coming from our neighbours. We only have one neighbour so we definitely know who it is. I’m aware that it’s his house and it’s up to him what he does etc but any tips on how to live with this??

we have 2 very small children and the smell in the garden is so overpowering that it stops you sitting outside with them 🤦🏻‍♀️

So far there doesn’t seem to be a pattern (.thought we could keep windows shut and stay indoors during these times etc) and it’s pretty much constant…

the smell is even clinging to our washing

any advice??

Depends how regular and how long. We lived next door to stoners for 2 years - they not only smoked but grew as well, and there was often a smell coming from the house. As above, it’s a bit of a no win situation and we ended up moving in the end. We actually were going to move anyway as were buying but we had a really good relationship with them and although never complained, chatted to them most days and I think had we said look lads can you knock it on the head a bit, they would have listened. If your stoners are violent / horrible / whatever then you probably need to just move. If that isn’t an option can you speak to them? If you have a good relationship then that would be my first port of call before getting the council involved. If they won’t change or are just !!!!!! who don’t care then up and leave. Easier obviously in certain situations than others, but you may just end up next door to other smokers. Can’t win sometimes.

If it's affecting your children then the police will be more concerned. Question is whether you're willing to go there or perhaps might be worth a friendl approach first?

Have you got a relationship where you can speak to your neighbours about this? Be upfront that you don't what to tell them what to do in their house, but that the smell is overpowering. They may be able to smoke in another room or change how they smoke, though to make a smell that strong in the garden would take a lot of smoking! If they're growing, they should want to avoid a strong smell outside (which might draw attention), though of course people aren't always sensible.
  • No Advise on how to live with it but im surprised you can smell it so strongly? I live in a studio flat and the flat next door to me (wall to wall) is empty but was surrounded by police last week. Someone broke in and filled it floor to ceiling with plants and I didn't smell a thing. None of us neighbours did and the only way we found out is because water was leaking into the flat downstairs.

I'd make an anon tip off.

The police won't be interested if it is only "personal use".

Politely mention the "flavoured tobacco" they must be using and i'm sure they will be more tactful about their timings of when they partake.

Worked with a friend of mine and his neighbour. (Friend popped there head over the fence and directly asked "What brand of tobacco is that? Smells really different").

As said before if the smell is strong enough to go on clothes, then they must be smoking a boatload of the stuff. Or growing it.

You could try Crimestoppers - they will keep you anonymous

I s the smell cannabis smoke,  or plants? If its the latter, then a call to Crimestoppers may be in order .

If it is smoke I would start with a polite conversation with the neighbours, and tsk t from there.

If they are just heavy smokers then I don't think the police will be interested, only if they are growing and/or dealing.

This is getting more prevalent everywhere now, until they start having a zero policy on using it, things can only get worse.
It is the same with crime in general, by not clamping down on low level crime it just escalates.
  • If the neighbour isn't hurting anyone and is just smoking for their own pleasure then it seems a bit harsh to involve the police.

Although, I don't know how much smoke would be needed for it to cling to washing.  That seems a lot.

My mum has next door neighbours who smoke cannabis every night in their garden but it doesn't come into her house or stick to her washing.  Is it definitely cannabis?
