Is ID required to collect lost bank card

Options
I left my debit card in my local Tesco last night, I went to get it today, I told the person the details on the card and the time I left it there, then they told me I need ID or they can't give it to me. I was told by the manager this is due to data protection laws, is this correct and what are you supposed to do if you don't have ID?

You'd be best to ask them, but it seems reasonable that they take some sort of steps to ensure they're handing it back to the right person.

They did do checks, they asked for the name on the card and time I left it in the store. This is not the first time I have done this and I have never been asked for ID before. I could tell them every detail on the card from memory but they said that wasn't acceptable!

I did ask them what if I didn't have ID and they wouldn't answer me.

Did the same in my local Tesco. They refused to give my card back as I had no ID with me. I cancelled the card as I didn't need it urgently and couldn't be bothered to go back again for it.

Yes but that is not the point, I had to go home to get it.

Would you rather Tesco handed the card over to some random person who could then use it to spend on?

Many stores now just cut the cards up and leave it to people to get a new one.

I'd love to know how some random person is going to know that I have lost my card in Tesco and the time I lost it, plus all the other details on the card that I offered to tell them, card number, sort code, account number and csv?

The women told me lots of people try to claim cards that aren't theirs but when I asked how they do that she couldn't explain it.

Like all company policies they can be broken and not followed or someone might not know the procedures. Unfortunately tesco are well within their rights to ask for a form of ID and its their company policy to do so.

Ideally what they will do is keep card until the next end of working day and if the customer does not return they should cut the card in half and dispose of it through their confidential waste procedure.

Of course they need proper ID, it could have been you who originally handed it in and has taken note of all the information on it.   If it had been handed into police station they would need ID too, Tesco did nothing wrong.

I have just rung Tesco and they told me it is a Tesco policy to comply with GDPR.
