I wouldn't want anyone to bring their dog to my house, even though I fuss most dogs that come past my house when I'm on the front gardening.But...assistance dogs are different (imho). They are an integral and important part of the owner's life.
Thank you, that's what I was asking. I'm generally happy for visitors to bring their dogs into our house, so whilst I totally respect some people's 'no dogs' choice, I find it hard to understand how far it goes.
I agree that exceptions should ideally be made for assistance dogs (it's obviously a different issue again if someone has allergies or is afraid of dogs).Well, exceptions are made for assistance dogs in lots of different areas i.e. they can go into places that ordinary dogs are not allowed into. But in a private house, I guess the owner makes the rules.Glad that the OP's family decided to leave their dog at home when they visited.0 -
I can't stand children. I don't like restaurants with kids shouting, running, yet dogs I have no problem with.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....6

Gitdog is over-friendly and despite years of training still has impulse control issues when he’s excited. Which is whenever he goes to a new place.Quite honestly if I’m visiting family or friends I want to relax and enjoy myself. Not be having an idiot bull terrier on the end of a short lead trying to knock everyone and everything over.So he either stays at home with a dog walker calling in, or he stays in the car if it’s not too hot, of if he’s allowed in the house I take a crate.
Family bbqs are not a barrel of laughs when you can’t eat or drink because you’re hanging onto the end of a lead.Just because I think he’s great doesn’t mean my nearest and dearest are obliged to feel the same. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.5 -

But each to their own, let's agree to differ.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton1 -
I went to an artisan market today. A friend was there with her daughter's dog. Admittedly the dog is only a youngster, but she was just barking and pulling and generally (in my opinion) making life a misery for my friend and others. I'd have left her at home until she was better trained.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

I don't understand why people want to trail their dog round a place where all they see is feet and legs. What enjoyment is there for the dog?

@Jude57 Nice to know our efforts are still appreciated.
If I knew how to put videos up privately I could show you agility and hoopers Gitdog style.
To be fair, hoopers was more an gentle stroll with adjournments to climb onto the reels rather than run round them while I tried to wind him up into a trot.
Flyball - straight as an arrow to the ball, huge circle back while he tried to work out how not to have to return it.
Agility was actually surprisingly impressive once he'd been persuaded to get going. We rarely did the course as planned - he'd do unilateral detours over the A frame or seesaw when he got bored, and we were generally greeted with "oh good, the entertainment has arrived" from other participants but it was a shame when arthritis put paid to us being able to attend.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I love my dog and he generally comes most places with us. We have a motorhome so he is trained and used to going to lots of different places and to not make nuisance of himself - being small we have had him under the table at restaurants and no one has even known we have a dog!
That being said I respect not everyone either likes dogs or wants them in their house and I would never foist him on anyone as that is just rude. There are a lot of dog owners who expect non dog owners to like and accept their dogs.Been around since 2008 but somehow my profile was deleted!!!3
