I can confirm from experience that the breakdown cover does not require the policy holder to be in the vehicle to make a claim.

You were given incorrect information by the call center. The website and the policy documents make that amply clear.

Of course insurance companies always make clear statements and never try to wriggle out claims.
Except this is breakdown cover not insurance. I have used my breakdown cover for three call outs with my flexplus account - never once have I been asked for any documentation about the ownership of car which has broken down or even had to show proof of ID to demonstrate I was the account holder.
Nationwide does not provide the cover directly. From the T&Cs document:
FlexPlus UK & European Breakdown and Recovery Assistance is underwritten by Liverpool Victoria Insurance Company Limited.

Glad to hear from someone who has used the cover and found it works well.

It seems pretty simple to me.

The account holder is covered "in any vehicle whether a driver or passenger, registered in the UK, that they are travelling in"

Anyone (and I mean anyone) is covered when they drive "one UK registered vehicle registered to the account holder and which is being used with his/her permission"

This means you have breakdown cover when:

    driving your car
    driving your auntie's car
in the car as a passenger with your auntie driving
your auntie driving your car whether or not you are in it

    Pretty comprehensive cover I think.

The policy holder can register one car which is covered irrespective of whether they are in it or not. This case is about their relative driving a different car, not the one registered on the account, so I don’t see how the information given out is incorrect.

I think as it is a joint account they can register two, although I am not sure if you actually have to 'register' them with NW.

You can’t register or nominate a car. If you call up Flexplus they even say it on the automated recorded message once you press ‘2 for breakdown cover’, presumably because a lot of people call trying to do that. So in effect, all cars owned by the policy holders are covered, even when driven by someone else.

People seem to be confused thinking they have to register a car with Nationwide, when in fact that clause simply means that the Vehicle Registration Document must have the account holder's name on it...

problem is the t&c say a single car is covered (two for a joint account) which begs the question what if the account holder has several cars.....

The one that is being driven at the time is covered. Of course if I'd been asked to nominate a vehicle that is the one I would have chosen :)  I suspect the number of people with multiple cars breaking down is fairly small and the 4 old cars I have is probably fairly unusual.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

If car needed to be registered anywhere, it would not be with Nationwide. It would need to be who provides the cover.
Banks do not provide any cover, it is all done by the 3rd party listed in the paperwork Liverpool Victoria Insurance Company Limited, in this case.
