If they did any background checks and found that the account holder is not insured to drive the car, they could end up with a big bill.

I take it that there is someway to register a car with them, or it is so open to abuse with statements like.

As long as the driver has your permission and is legally allowed to drive.

I'm not aware of anyway to register a car with them but it's not difficult for them to request the V5 to confirm the keeper/owner is the account holder if they suspect an issue. I've used the service a number of times and have never been asked to confirm my ownership but equally I've been in the car when it's happened.

Doesn't say you don't need to be in the car.

You could still be in the car but not driving.

The basis of insurance in the UK is to pay lots of premiums to insurers, get confused, try to claim, enter a monumental haggling match and see who backs down first.

or as this thread demonstrates no one really knows what the hell the wording means as we all ‘interpret’ it in our own way and assume we know what we are talking about even though the insurance company itself will tell you all sorts of variations of what is covered or not, the former when you are paying the premium, the latter when you make a claim.

I have two vehicles registered in my name and both are covered via RBS Royalties even if I’m not present.

My wife had an issue in one and called the Green Flag contact number and all they required was the registered keeper’s name and verbal confirmation that I was still an RBS Royalties customer. She does not have RBS account and there was no problem in arranging a speedy roadside repair.

This sounds very similar to the wording in the Op’s T&C’s as I am also covered if travelling in a 3rd party’s vehicle.

I took it to mean, my car was covered, even if I wasn't in it. If my partner was driving it (without me) but with my permission.

That is what the discussion is about.

What is the insurance companies interpretation of the condition.

We all know how insurance companies wriggle out of claims.

Equally it doesn't say you DO need to be in the car. If that was a requirement it would be a pretty fundamental clause and would need to be specified. As it isn't mentioned anywhere in the documentation it isn't a requirement.

Of course insurance companies always make clear statements and never try to wriggle out claims.

Except this is breakdown cover not insurance. I have used my breakdown cover for three call outs with my flexplus account - never once have I been asked for any documentation about the ownership of car which has broken down or even had to show proof of ID to demonstrate I was the account holder.
