I went to the shop earlier today and for the first time tried using Google Pay on my phone for a small transaction for 30 pound

Halifax card - did not work. Kept saying error
CC - did nt work, kept saying error

Monzo - third attempt of a card worked fine

    Anyone know the issue?

Spoke to google pay and the banks and they said should work fine
I assume you can use the cards in question ok on contactless?  I generally find Google Pay very reliable.  Some terminals take longer, also just make sure you hold 5hw the phone until you see acknowledgement on the screen.

I found Curve to be flaky and would randomly decline. Once all my card issuers appeared on GooglePay, it quickly lost it's appeal.
My experience is completely different. It’s been working quite flawlessly for me and Curve has unique value for me as it often allows me to use [non-Amex] cashback credit cards where only debit cards are accepted. I appreciate such cards are now rare to come by, so this benefit is not available to all.
I know some people used Curve to pay bills but my providers accept credit cards or are on D/D.
For my day to day shopping, I prefer S75 and chargeback abilities that Curve will remove.

I'm not using a debit or a credit card to pay regular bills, as they are all on DDs.

I am obviously aware of S75 and know that I can preserve my S75 rights if I pay a token amount directly with my credit card. As to chargeback, I am satisfied that I have the same chargeback rights with a debit card, particularly a Mastercard, as I have with a credit card.

But not to worry, as non-Amex cashback credit cards are now rather rare, not many will be fortunate enough to benefit from the cashback.

Have you registered the cards with Halifax? When I did mine I had to call halifax to set them up.

Im not sure - ive put the cards on google pay and gone through the halifax terms and conditions etc which you have to agree to so i assume you mean that? I spoke to halifax - i knew it would be a waste of time and it was. Standard reply saying try again, sometime we block for security. Nonsense

When I set up my Credit Card (Halifax) after scanning the card, T/C there was a number to ring Halifax to set up at their end. Offred to ring it for you.

I switched from Nationwide as my default payment card to Halifax when I opened my new Halifax account a couple of months ago. NW never failed but Halifax has twice - out of around 75 transactions, both at reasonably large shops. Not a massive problem for me because I can just flip it to NW to complete the transaction. Adds to the reasons for having two bank accounts I suppose.

Might just be blips on the Halifax's authentication occasionally, but I find GPay is now so reliable that I don't worry about ever taking my wallet out with me much anymore.

It may be the shop set up. Near me is one small convenience store that I always have difficulty with. All three bank accounts never let me use contactless or Apple pay. I always have to use chip and pin. It’s never a problem elsewhere.

I don't use GPay myself, only ApplePay, which essentially always works for me, with a number of different debit and credit cards. You could try making a (free) Curve card the only card you use with GPay, and then change your card / your purchases as you need to in the Curve app.

Curve also has a nice Anti-Embarrassment Mode which lets you set up to two backup cards which it will automatically try if your usual card doesn't work for some reason. This saves you fiddling about with cards at the checkout (though I can only remember one instance a few months ago when it was actually used, at a Lidl checkout).

Plus, their "Go back in time" feature allows you to move a purchase, less than 90 days old, from one card to another.
Curve GO BACK IN TIME feature is now going back to 30 days, so they say 😩
