What to do with soap

Someone gave me a soap-related tip the other day, that rubbing a little bit of bar soap on the edge of new shoes/trainers can help stop them rubbing and hurting. I've not tried it yet so cant vouch if it works - has anyone else come across it before?Savings goal by 31/12/24: £22000

Just bite the bullet and use them as soap until you run out, then go back to your usual 🙂
They get used up not thrown and x number of plastic bottles in the meantime are not bought. It may seem like a small impact but they all add up 🙂I am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. Give away
Where I live people often put things outside their door/ on their wall whatever with a notice 'Free to take'. That way anybody who would like it gets a gift
A couple of weeks ago my friend 'chose' a new candle worth over £30. She was thrilled.
Any one packing shoeboxes (yes, I know it's not Christmas... yet!!) would love the soap as it is one of the essential items on the 'Link to Hope' list - boxes which go to very poor folk in E.Europe (Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Ukraine)
Personally I rarely use soap- just one bar in the kitchen to scrub up with after gardening but this is the house of upcycle / donate/ don't just throw!
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Another vote for grating it and using for things that need hand washing, if you have any. I’ve recently started using soap instead of hand wash because it lasts a lot longer as well. Well drained soap dish is a must though. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.2 -
I'm still pondering the objection to soap. Some can crack and look unsightly, but that takes a good while, anyway. They work out cheaper that liquid soap and there's minimal use of plastic.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

I don't think so!

With the laundry washing suggestions, be careful if you have hard water - it can leave a scum which you really don't want in your washing machine. For hand washing laundry it might be okay.
In terms of the objections, of course I don't know OP's situation but soap is alkaline and skin is acidic (including scalp). Normal skin can often cope with it but sensitive skin often can't - the development of modern detergents wasn't just a money-making, environment-destroying scamMany people do just fine with soap, even with our hard water, but many others don't. For equivalent alternatives to hand wash, shampoo, etc. you'd need a syndet bar rather than a soap bar which unfortunately is more expensive and less easily produced than soap.

It can work for hand washing delicate items like underwear without even bothering to grate it.
We're fortunate in that someone in my road collects for the food bank but it seems OP doesn't go to the supermarket and doesn't want to ask friends to drop them off. That's a shame as ours frequently need toiletries. ☹️0
