Symbio Energy threatening me with court action

Energy Bill dispute with Symbio Energy. Now with Ombudsman through Resolver. Meanwhile Symbio have made money claim against me through HMCTS.

If I respond and pay the amount I think I owe, am I liable for claim fee and interest as well?

All I want is a correct bill from Symbio £40 instead £253. I want to pay.

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

    OK, I'll bite.
We need more info. What exactly is your dispute with Symbio? How long has it been going on? What led to Symbio making a court claim against you?

I think as this stands the only advice you're going to get is provide some details, not sure what you want people to say based on such limited information.

I'll stick my neck out and say this has probably been caused by not reading meters for months on end, as that's usually what causes this "I think I owe £40 but they think I owe them £253" sort of situation.  All could have been avoided for 30 seconds work a month.
  • Thank you!

I moved into a new property where Symbio was the existing supplier.  At first I thought I’d stick with them, before they sent me a bill for £250 for 1 month.  I have submitted countless meter readings along with photos.  They repeatedly refuse to use these to calculate my actual bill, which should be in the region of £40.  I’ve also tried to switch supplier, which they have blocked. My new supplier has taken out a dispute procedure with them.

Just not sure how to respond to the court claim..

Can you confirm that when you moved in you rang Symbio, gave them the meter read and your name - if you didn't its possible that some of that £250 belonged to the previous tenant.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Yes, I gave symbio my reading and submitted a photo on the day I moved in

If you're certain that you are correct then let them take you to court and mount a fairly simple defence showing the evidence of your actual readings and your futile attempts to resolve the matter with common sense. You stand a good chance of being awarded costs and possibly more if the judge considers their actions to be unreasonable.
  • Thank you.  That’s reassuring.  It’s been a very stressful time.

If you want to share your meter readings & dates, and tariff details here, we can double-check them for you of you wish?

  • That’s very kind!  This is what I’ve calculated:
    12.3.21 Opening meter reading: 00.103090
    23.3.21 00.103199
    31.3.21 00.103318
    7.4.21 Closing meter reading: 00.103391

    27 days of energy owing.
Standing charge. 27 days at 16.190p per day = £4.21p
    kWh 301 hrs at 12.152p per kWh = £36.58p

    £4.21p + £36.58p = £40.79p

    Final bill total: £40.79p
