Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross might fit your bill and you can get a good low mileage 19 plate or newer for your budget.1

Why? You're not going to be saving much. Albeit all modern luxury cars are probably pretty good fuel wise, you can get a lot more for your money if you look at stuff with poor fuel economy because everyone is obsessed with MPG and not total spend.

Whilst I'm sure BMWs are all well built and refined, any that I've been in have been pretty meh and just remind me of a Passat I had for a while. There was nothing wrong it it, but nothing great about it either, it was just 'fine'.
I'm pretty confident you could put a BMW badge on a VW or a Skoda and most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I just don't think they are worth the price premium especially when you see what else you can get for the same money as, say, a base spec BMW X1.
You could just as easily say there's an element of placebo effect with some people who think just because it's a BMW it MUST be better.
It's almost certainly placebo affect above a point. A friend of mine used to sell high end stereos and a £30k set isn't objectively any better than a £5k set, but people with sufficient money will insist that they are. More power to them an all that, but it's not based on anything quantifiable.

Budget approx 20k.
We don't do huge mileage but still looking for reasonable MPG.
Comfortable interior rather than performance.
Have often bought cars via BCA so happy to visit auctions again.
Thanks in advance0 -

I don't really see a negative side.
You're buying a car that a dealer might buy, drive to his forecourt and put a few extra grand on the sale price.
There are all sorts of online ways of finding out the history and value of the vehicle to help you.
Ideally something around three years old with a full service history and reasonable mileage.
If you're bidding against dealers you know it's ok.Plus it's a grand day out that might end up with you driving away with a new motor.Of course if you're operating near the cheaper end of the market you need your wits about you.
Essentially you're cutting out the middle man.1 -
We’ve just bought a Toyota rav4 excel. 2 years old ex motability car. We looked at lexus but thought the ux/nx we’re ugly. Enough toys to keep us entertained. So far very pleased. Getting about 45mpg around town, only disappointment is there is nowhere to play a cd, only usb or android/Apple play. And memory feature only applies to seat, not mirrors. The beauty of Toyota/lexus is that if you have the car serviced at the main dealer they will give another years manufacturers warranty up to 100k miles 10 years.
can’t go wrong really.0 -
Honda CRV (ex trim). 1.6D or 2.2d. Very reliable, come with tons of kit. Plenty to choose from too.0

A top spec RAV4 would be worth a shout especially as potentially (as above) 10 years 100000 miles warranty is a no brainer.0
