Best 2nd hand fuel-efficient luxury mid-size SUV ?

Looking to plunge into the SUV market for the first time and hoping to pick something up at car auctions.
I don't need a huge size as the family has flown the nest just something that's easy for me and the missus to get our creaking bodies in and out of.
A mixture between stylish interior, good MPG, reasonable performance that has a good track record for reliability.
Suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.

...hoping to pick something up at car auctions.
Let me guess... You think this is going to be a great way to buy something good, cheap?

It won't be. It'll be a great way to get tucked up like a kipper for a dog.

That apart, spend some time on Autotrader, and figure out what your budget's likely to get you. Then go round some dealers/supermarkets, and see which actually float your boat. THEN try and find the right particular car.

Define good MPG and what journey type?
I kept fuel logs on a previous car and over a full tank of fuel it averaged 29mpg (short winter journey's)
Yet the same car also averaged 57mpg (trips to the coast with only a few traffic jams).
Single journeys it could average over 60MPG according to the trip, how accurate? I know the other
figures are correct as they were worked out after every fillup.
Current car is enviromentally friendly and cheap tax yet uses more fuel than my previous car.

Whats your budget and have you a particular size / car in mind at the moment?  That could be useful for us to pitch alternatives.

Whats your definition of good MPG?  Have you a preference for a petrol?

I'd look at a Hyundai Kona EV if you've got the money, or an MG ZS EV if money is tighter.

Auctions are always a good way to buy something cheap - I've bought my last five cars from auctions and always come away happy.
But thanks for your input ...

Budget is not really an issue.
Something like an X5 but not a tank.
Probably around 3 years old or so.
    Happy with diesel or petrol.
Would just like something comfortable, decent interior , probably 35+mpg.

So definitely not a BMW X5 then.

You've played the roulette wheel of auctions before and your chips have been on right side of red or black.  It won't always be that way.  I hope you have a good cash reserve to pick up any pricey repairs.  SUVs have generally massively inferior mpg in comparison to a saloon or estate/hatchback.
