Something I have said in the past is what is British anymore?

If the staff are primarily not born/raised in the UK, the owners are from another country even other side of the world at what point does something not become British?

On a related note I remember quite a few years back American companies making things like tv's in Mexico, shipping them across border and putting them in boxes in America and that was the loophole to let them put "made in US" on the box.

Read an article yesterday about how in 2000, £5 billion of stuff was imported from China. In 2020, over £20 billion of stuff was imported. Looked at my clothes was horrified to find that almost all my jumpers came from China. Other clothes come from Portugal, Turkey and India.
Can anyone recommend where I can get good quality knitwear made in the UK?
I have started to look at Shetland, has anyone ever bought one from the island? DH and I are thinking of having our summer holiday up that way next year.

  • On one of my visits to the UK, I was stuck in Hull for several days (great town). I spent one afternoon visiting a shop similar to Woolworths looking for small items to take home. After several hours, I finally found one item made in the UK - an Easter ornament which I bought. Everything else said "Made in China". It's not the big stuff that you have to watch out for - it's the little things like kitchen supplies, Christmas ornaments, office supplies, and toys. That is where we are having trouble in the US also.

These people make their own knitwear here in the UK and their clothes do last well which is a good thing because the new prices reflect the amount of labour that goes into them. What Makes Your Knitwear Special? | David Nieper

  • I’ve had wool sent from Shetland to Canada.  The suppliers up there are very friendly and knowledgeable.  Tell them what you are looking for and they are only too helpful.   I’d love to get the shops in person.
