I wouldn't worry about making a claim, that's what insurance is for. I had to make a claim a couple of weeks after taking out a policy, nobody accused me of fraud. The insurance company were very efficient, paid out new for old and it was settled upon my providing photos of my damaged bike and equipment as well as links via email to the replacement that I was going to buy. The claim was settled before I'd purchased the new items, by payment into my bank account.

Obviously, my premium did go up the following year and the excess was subtracted from the claim payment but the uplift in premium wasn't massive and very little compared to the amount of the claim.

There's a massive amount of moving parts in this thread!!

    - Might the claim look suspect, 2 weeks after specific Accidental Damage cover was added, some 18 months after cover was originally incepted without Accidental Damage cover?    Yes.  Expect some questions from the insurer regarding this.  They might not raise any questions..but they might.    I don't doubt the veracity of your account, but please be mindful that insurers have ways of ensuring that the information is factual, including the operating information on the laptop itself.

    - Is the claim worthwhile?    Possibly.  Depends on value, excess and possible future premium impact

    - One poster's warning regarding declaration of previous claims/losses was spot-on, and went over the OP's head.  Care required here.  Insurers will expect disclosure of previous claims and losses, even if no insurance claim was made, or no policy in place. If you haven't disclosed (which I can understand), you may not wish to broadcast that your brood are constantly breaking stuff!!  Non disclosure could result in your policy being avoided.

There's no reason not to make a (genuine) claim, but as with every action, there is a reaction, and the OP should be mindful of that.

  • Thanks for the reply just to clarify I only just took out the entire policy , I've not had any contents insurance for 18 months just I moved and didn't renew with a different supplier. I've fully disclosed a previous claim from 2018 when a phone was stolen on holiday and we used the home insurance as the holiday insurance wasn't playing ball. I'm obviously not gonna tell any insurance company my kids have no sense of looking after stuff.

Remember that a valuable laptop that you paid say £2000 for is not going to be worth anything like that now.
You would be better getting a quote for repairs to the laptop before you contact your insurance company.
    My opinion only of course.

That's better.   I thought you had just added AD cover on current policy.  Should be fine.

How much is the laptop to replace?
  • The laptop was 2200 it is 3 years old and they don't make them with these parts anymore , it's a gaming laptop as long as I get one with the same size screen that performs as good as this one I'm fine but how much that costs I have no idea. The cover has new for old built in if that makes any difference

Home insurance typically don't ask about "losses"... in theory every chipped plate, drop of coffee spilled etc are losses

The insurers may not be so optimistic, prices normally fall much faster than that.

As to it being so close to inception... it'll be a red flag and its likely they'll kick the tyres harder than if you'd been a customer claim free for 4 years etc. Insurers don't have exclusion periods on Home insurance and its just about if they can gather sufficient evidence of fraud to decline the claim
