I think if there is 100% failure rate, DVSA will investigate them.

I think people just need to use common sense, just like any other garage, get a quote, get second opinion, shop around, if u have to pay £15 retest fee, so be it

Where your theory breaks down is that I have paid for MOT's that have failed.

Probably with genuine reason. Why do Halfords want to give away free MOTs? Are they a charity? Or do they want to upsell stuff that you don’t really need?

it's called a loss leader. They are hoping you'll buy their stuff if it fails, or buy other stuff whilst you're in.
I usually buy *something* if I'm in a business getting a freebie.

    Exactly.

Anyone in Retail knows the hardest part is getting customers through the door in the first place;...it’s the Holy Grail for all businesses, not just Halfords.

The free MOT gets customers through the door and those customers are a ‘potential’ source of immediate/future revenue. Customers have the choice whether to spend or not,...Halfords will win on some and lose on others.

There’s nothing sinister about it unless one believes Halfords mechanics are under pressure to deliberately  and fraudulently ‘fail’ a vehicle that should otherwise pass its MOT 😮;...but that’s another story.

I bought a kid's bike last week and the free MOT thing just popped up in my email a day or two later.
No use for it myself, cars are too new, but there you go.
Lol. Am assuming this is not a serious post. Such arrogance. This is MSE
Statement of fact, nothing arrogant about it all.
We lease our cars, not interested in owning, so they're never more than 3 years old.
Should the MSE motoring forum be full of people running old bangers on a shoestring?
    Do tell.

Well, I will tell you next week. I have my wife's Audi A3 booked in for a free Halfords MOT.

Her car is very low miles, the only advisory she's ever had is corroded rear brakes and getting a local trusted mechanic to replace the rear discs, pads and shields on Friday and give it a service and the once over.

If it does fail, they will be conning it, but they will get zero business from me.

Clearly you've not bothered reading the previous posts where at least a couple say not only passed but no advisories.
