1. Buy from RS(6y) or JL(5y) (there are a couple of others that offer 5y as well)

https://www.johnlewis.com/browse/electricals/televisions/view-all-tvs/size=39-to-46/_/N-6srfZ1z0oizsI just looked at 2 TVs of the same size on the JL website, similar or worse specs, but around double the price. They didn't even list the NITS, same 20 watts and resolution. How is the ordinary person meant to understand which are better TVs?0 -

In all honesty most people really don't care. "Can I watch Bargain Hunt on it? Yes. I'll take it."

I'm not really interested in tvs but like HiFi. For years people have been sold items using watts as a measure of quality or a judgement of whats better which in reality watts don't measure sound quality and are often a very misleading measure of output power. There will be countless ways to measure screens, very few will be relevant to tv users. Not because of ignorance but because in isolation they mean little. They're techno babble offered to claim one tv is better than others for buyers looking for a reason to choose one tv over another.

Research like you do with anything.
look at technical sites for any reviews(not which) and compare.
Take the TV you picked.a few reviews

Then unless brand new you look for user experience(I start with AVF).

from the expertreview. reviewJVC Fire TV Edition: Verdict
Despite all its flaws, the JVC isn’t irredeemably bad. The Fire TV interface is very likeable despite its more sluggish moments, and being able to tell Alexa what you want to watch is a big plus. It’s all wonderfully easy to use, too, and the one-box simplicity may prove a big selling point to some buyers.
The poor motion handling and upscaling will rightfully knock it off many people’s wish lists, but for watching everyday TV and streaming services, it’s passable. If you find it at a good discount, then you may be willing to forgive its flaws – and you might even find yourself pleasantly surprised at what you do get for the money.
My summary from the limited research
Saved by the Fire TV UI
Good for everyday use or a second TV in a bedroom or kitchen on a budget.
Good value option at that price point

from the expertreview. reviewOne of the reviews says that the 49" TV is better, it has a better contrast ratio at 6,000/1I would have had that one, had it been for myself.

If the black level details are better that can be useful.

Chino said:What makes you think that you'd be able to perceive the difference between a contrast ratio of 4,000:1 and a contrast ratio of 6,000:1?It is a big difference. The TV is now set up in my 93 yr old relatives room. The remote is very small and slim, not ideal for a gentleman of 93, but seemed ok.His old TV had a connector for a screw-in cable/BB connector, but not this TV. I am guessing that type of connector has been superseded by ethernet connectors. No scart sockets, but that was known.0
