Curious - why do you get so many power cuts, anyway?!!

Hi, thanks, good to know :)

I have no idea but I generally will get 1 brief power outage prob every couple of months or so.  I suspect it is due to power being supplied overhead to my area.  It is usually out for few seconds and every time i check online no issues reported but suspect because it is soo brief, it may not even register.

It has done it ever since i bought the place, if we get a storm like the other week it can go off several time.

People in nearby areas were without power as a transformer blew and needed replacing so some only had part power until full power could be restored.

My parents place used to get brief power outages every now and again but not as frequent as my place but rarely get one now, last time was when there was a power outage that affected a large amount of the country so i can only presume the power is supplied underground now meaning not as much impact but mine is still overhead so suffer from these issues.

I can tell when it went out last as my Nest Protect smoke alarm stores when power goes out and since the storm no power outages showing but i think it only keeps like last 2 or 3 weeks of records so can't check back any further.

It is annoying tbh but oh well :)

    What causes brief power cuts?
A short power cut is a break in supply lasting just a few seconds. Most common in rural areas supplied by overhead lines, these can be caused by lightning, birds or windborne debris

    or

What causes power to go out for a few seconds?
Momentary interruptions of your power can last up to a few seconds and are usually caused by a temporary short circuit. Short circuits occur when something comes in contact with power lines, such as an animal or a tree limb

    according to google :)

managed to get a much cheaper programmer so got 2 options now.  Thinking will try replace programmer & see if that's ok, if not will use timer loop.

    Just waiting delivery.

And once you've shown that the loop works just as well as the Prog, you can sell it on

    Hi all,

So programmer has been fitted and going to give it a week before I try turning boiler off/on, let it sit as is for a while.

I've now taken other one apart and I think it may actually have a battery but it's soldered on.

So question is, can I get a replacement battery..

On it are the below details:-

ELNA 1.0F 5.5v 1410 - it's silver circle with purple sleeve round the edge, possibly shrink wrapped on it.

I can find ELNA 1.0F 5.5v but none with 1410, i have found others with different numbers but not sure what 1410 means.

Anyone familiar with these or know where can source one from as thinking if battery is cheap enough, to buy one and fitting to this as solder points look easy to get to and then keeping this one as a spare as I can't find a date when it was done so unknown how old the replacement is I bought or how long battery will hold for.

    Thanks

    Photo?
It does sound more like a capacitor, although its purpose in this case could well be to behave as a short-term battery for not-too-long powercuts.
Ie, they are kept constantly charged up, and then will provide power to keep the prog's settings going for a certain time after the mains power is removed. (But not nearly for as long as an actual battery would).
Does it appear swollen (matron!)? That's a common symptom of a failed leccy cap.
I wouldn't worry about the 1410 part - the important specs are the 1F (one whole Farad is actually quite a lot, so it does suggest its purpose in this setup), and the voltage.
The good news is that they come with PCB-mounting solder tabs already in place, because you really don't want to be soldering direct to the component.
    Sounds promising Kev :-)

    ah ok, I've PM'd you pics :)

Yes i saw the 5.5v and 1.0F but i can't work out what the 1410 is.. i've been looking at a Elna link which describes the different types etc but still can't fathom where the 1410 comes in...
