I had to cancel virgin broadband

Hi I just wanted some advice. I’m a long long loyal customer virgin in fact I’ve never been with anyone else. I have a 350mb connection with free evening and weekend calls. Which I never use. I was paying £39.99 a month with discounts for a year then my bill went up recently and now my new bill is £46. I tried to discuss with the leaving department but she was trying to give me the 500mb confection for £58 or something. I just really wanted to stick with the same price or better and not change speeds. Anyway, I said I would cancel and she put me through to the next stage. The lady offered me £41 but for 18 months. That didn’t seem like a good deal. She said I couldn’t get any better speed anywhere else and she wouldn’t budge on the offer... So I have now left. Have I made a mistake? Will they offer something better to stay later on? I’ve heard that’s normally the case. Anyone got any experience?

They may or may not. But probably not if they'd already dropped to £41.0

350mb connection with free evening and weekend calls (phoneline included) for £46 is good and £41 even better IMHO.
Virgin have never called me back for a re-connection offer, when I left.1 -

They should call normally so I don’t know why they didn’t with you. Are you a long term customer?0 -
The only way to get those speeds is to have fibre to the house. If Openreach have cabled your area you will be able to get it with BT, TalkTalk, Sky and others. If they haven't cabled to your house you are limited to fibre to the cabinet and that will be lower speeds (maybe 100Mb at most, probably less). If you have no copper cable to your house then you will need to get it reinstated anyway.
But with BT you are looking at £50 for 300Mb, with TalkTalk £40 for 300Mb. These are 18 or 24 month contracts for data only, no calls.
I think you had a great price with Virgin, £41 for those speeds is pretty good, especially with free calls.0 -
Maybe they don't call if they know that the alternative options through a BT line give a poor speed. They just have to sit back and wait for the user to come back of their own accord if they need/want a decent speed.0

I live in a flat but it’s pretty close to the city so hopefully I will have more choice. Is there any website that tells your available broadband options?£41 is good and I was paying a lot more in the past. I just think they could have at least matched my original deal. The free calls is pointless to me I don’t use it and my phone is taken out of the wall. I use my mobile for calls. Who calls landlines these days.0 -

Now fibre to the premises is more common there is more competition for fast speeds. But most of the prices are still in the £30-50 range. You can check what you can get via an Openreach (BT) line here https://www.openreach.com/#checkavailabilityMSE has a price comparison here
