Scan Computers - a horrendous experience

I've just recently had a most horrible experience with SCAN Computers.
They sold me a faulty computer - it had a very noisy fan. I returned it and they refunded me for the actual PC but refused to accept it had a fault (they classed it simply as 'unwanted') so I am now £44 out of pocket for the outgoing and return postage. (I have since bought a new PC from elsewhere, which is as silent as the grave, so I'm not just pernickety). Not sure what I can do about it because it's their word against mine and their engineer has decided it isn't faulty. However, I can tell you that after I first set it up, my partner walked into the room and said, 'My God, what is that noise?!'
They also claimed on their website and on numerous phonecalls that the PC would "definitely" be with me the next day (I need it for my business) but it took 10 days to arrive. I would have minded less had they claimed Covid, which we all know has affected businesses, and said that at the outset. But they never once claimed Covid was slowing them down in this instance. They simply promised each day the PC would arrive next day and each day it didn't. I had to chase and chase to even get the PC delivered at all as it got 'stuck' in the system. Horrendous experience.
They have a lot of positive reviews everywhere, which baffles me, but each person's experience is different I suppose. Anyway, this is my experience and I honestly wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.

Was it advertised as silent or quiet?

Had it installed all programs etc? (new computers can have a lot to do when you first turn them on so it can take a few days to settle down).

There's also other factors that could affect it. Other hardware and also software/system options.

They told me it should be quiet when I first called them about the issue. It wasn't advertised as specifically silent, no, but I've bought many PCs in my time and never heard anything like that. Nor has my partner, who's worked in offices all his life.

That is not for you to decide. They themselves told me it should be quiet. They initially offered to repair it but after my experience, I told them I wanted a refund.

It is not for you to decide either really, either there is a technical fault with the fan, or there is not, and the fan is responding to load, which have others have mentioned can be from something the user is actively doing, or, on a newly turned on PC whilst it is installing a bunch of updates. As an example now my desktop is entirely silent, only the fan on the PSU is running, if I start rendering, video editing or playing games it will slowly ramp up until the fans end up making noise, that is not a fault, is is load dependant fan throttling.

They initially told you they would make a repair, based on you telling them there was a fault, you then told them you wanted a refund, based on there being a fault. Once they received the goods back they discovered there was no fault.

The noise was continuous and never abated at all. As soon as it was turned on, the noise started and then just continued. This is not the first time I've encountered a computer. I have owned many in my life and I know that they make a slight whirring when they are loading and so on. This was something different. I would ask you not to doubt my word with no reason. Thank you.

Jus to counterbalance this.. I bought a Laptop from them recently myself... one of the fan bearing was also very noisy. I sent it back and they fixed and returned no hassles at all. As @Mickey666 said all companies drop the ball from time to time.

Starting to think the way you're talking to a forum about this might be indicative of the reasons why they decided to treat your issue they way they did.

They asked and offered to repair it, you declined. As a B2B transaction as well lowers you rights.
