Painting a rental property all the same colour. Good v bad idea?

  • I looked up the DEC emulsion and found it rather oppressive, I would favour brilliant white matt, with maybe a feature wall to the tenants taste.
  • I actually like magnolia. It’s neutral and light. I’m not a fan of grey, but it’s fairly neutral.

Are you looking for a colour that the most people will be OK with (I would say white or just off white) or something that a smaller number of people will really like and other people dislike?
I'm looking for something that is easy to look after (white is not that), something that is pretty neutral and versatile. For example light grey which is what a went for can work for a boys bedroom. Drop of blue in the room, bedclothes etc. Cant work in a girls bedroom with the same in pink. Can work in an adults bedroom.

And generally is acceptable around the rest of the house.

Magnolia in a bedroom of a young kid is horrible. While grey may not be much better for some I think it gives slightly more options.

  • I think grey can be a nice 'neutral' colour but can also look cold and stark - all depends on the shade and room. French grey is warmer and could be worth considering.
Assuming the place is unfurnished you want something as neutral as possible so if it's not white then a very pale cream or french grey would be my choice.

White is no harder to look after than a very pale grey or off white.  Marks and scuffs will show up just the same.  In fact its easier because you don't have to have the exact shade to touch up, any white will do.

God forbid someone put grey in a girls room! How will they cope! 🤦🏼‍♀️

I agree- when we had our kitchen done we couldn’t decide on a colour so ended up just painting it white as a temporary measure. We liked it so much over time I’ve repainted the whole rest of the house white. Several rooms were off white shades previously and being fully white made such a difference to how bright the house is. Maybe it’s because our house is very small so there’s not a lot of blank wall space.

I’ve had no issue with touching up, in fact I’d say where I have done touch ups is much less noticeable than with the previous colours.

Can you still get magnolia? I think it is horrible, really dated with a yellow tinge. There are so many off whites to choose from if you don't want white.
