Bank (Debit) Cards

Isn't it time to have our Photo's on Debit (and or credit) cards. It isn't difficult to have a card printer in every branch - my last employer's ID card was printed and embossed in the company security office with Name and Photo along with company details; the cards are NFC, Chipped and Magnetic stripe for using on the various company computer systems. Reason I'm asking the question is twice this month I've had to produce my passport along with bank card to conduct transactions as they needed photographic identity also.

What sort of transaction needs your passport?  Do tell!
Photo-debitcards are old hat, I had one back in the 1990s, no one ever looked at it, and anyway the pic was too small to be a worthwhile form of id.
And, re branches having card machines, most people rarely use branches, so the need would be at the central card processing place, not the branch, I doubt banks will want to invest in more kit for branches.
And banks seem happy enough with existing security systems without photo-id - it would be yet another cost for them to set-up.
What was it that you needed photo id for?

Banks do not have card printers in branch, or at least most do not. They are all produced by companies who provide the service, not by the actual banks.
Even with what you suggest, if they need proof for payment, they will want more than one form.
What sort of payments required further ID?

  • I don't have a passport (valid) and never ever been asked to provide one for a transaction. "Had to", really? A photo Driving Licence should suffice as an alternative.

I think that I read that someone like Metro Bank do print them in the branches this but for most banks it would be considered a security risk to have blank cards and machines scattered around the country. It would additionally cost a small fortune that someone will need to pay for. As for having your picture on the card, I had one on a Lloyds card many years ago so the technology is there but I don't see it as needed, to be frank.

Never had to show a passport to make a debit card transaction. Where does/did this happen? What were the amounts involved?

It may be that the OP needed to show a passport because that was the only photo ID they had.  I've used a driving licence for ID when I couldn't remember my PIN when visiting a bank branch (a rare event).

With personalised cards we could add our own picture on the cards.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
