In general, would you say a garage or a conservatory increase a houses value?

Forget the conservatory. Build a decent rear extension and remodel the downstairs in the process.2

If I were looking for a property Id rather buy one with a garage than a conservatory.

For me personally:
Attached garage - definitely
Detached garage adjacent to house - yes but to a lesser degree
Detached garage remote from house - no
With conservatories it depends, some of them look hideous and reduce the value, others are 'meh' and make no real difference, a small minority are actually quite nice. The size of the garden is a factor too, if a conservatory swallows up a significant chunk of the garden it's a big negative.0 -
It would surely depend on what the the garage and the conservatory were like. A concrete sectional garage and a badly built, uninsulated conservatory are both equally useless for anything much, except storing bikes and junk.I know some very nice conservatories which are used all year, but they weren't built by the usual double glazing outfits.0

Good quality garage with power - yes adds value. Garage with no power or distant from the property much less so.
Conservatories seem to age badly. My brother's house has one added by a previous owner and it was loads of work for them to make useful.0 -
I personally dislike conservatory’s. I once rented a house with one and it was too cold in the winter (despite it having a radiator) and too hot in the summer. I’ve viewed houses with them where they either look green and run down or take up too much of the garden. I have a friend who uses one as a second lounge but when it rains it’s so noisy on the roof.A garage would add more value for me and houses with garages do tend to sell more quickly.0

I definitely found the conservatory on the house we just bought an added bonus. I've never had one before and didn't realise how cold they are in the winter, but I love ours. As long as the sun is shining, it's lovely and warm in there. I often sit out there on a cold sunny day pretending it's summer. I mean I guess it depends on what way your garden is facing as to whether it gets the sun or not, but mine does. Although that said, I would much prefer an extension on the back there rather than a conservatory.
With garages, I often find they're not big enough for the cars and they just become an extra shed/dumping ground. For that reason, I think we'll convert ours into an extra living space. So I'm not fussed at all about a garage, as long as it has a drive where I can park the car.0 -
..garage for me, (we have both anyway), and yes I think conservatory's can be a bit over rated for the reasons given above. ie too cold in Winter and too hot in summer, (just about right during Spring and Autumn). We are thinking of options to change ours into a "proper room".

Garage for me (and I dont drive).
Know 3 people with conservatories. 1 house South facing, one North and 1 West.
No one uses the conservatory and all for same reason either too hot or too cold.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -
Garage - yes, for obvious reasons.
Conservatory - the prospect of an aging UPVC tack on with mossy windows and tatty cane furniture doesn't fill me with glee, but it might be a handy place to stick a tumble dryer. A properly built sun-room, on the other hand, is a rather nice feature to have.0
