I've spent another £61 at the market today! I really will have to behave for the rest of the month. But in my defence, cod was requested as this week's fish dish, and 4 large, fresh cod steaks came to £20. A bit of a treat... the chips will be HM, from the sack of Wiljas in the garage, and the broccoli to go with it all was just £1, so all in all it's still much cheaper than F&C x 4.
Edited to add: the cod was absolutely superb, worth every penny. Firm & tasty, DD2's comment was, "Well that puts cod & chips from the chip shop to shame!" And it's really good chippy...Angie - GC Aug25: £207.73/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)9 -

Evening all. A few spends to update. Yesterday I remembered that OH bought milk and ice cream for himself earlier in the week. Those were £4.75 at M & S. Today we visited again after a walk where we got 3 for £10 breaded fish, various yoghurts, ham, bananas, oat cakes, broccoli, and some black bean sauce so he can do a stir fry later with some udon we have. That visit came to £28.85. Next we slipped into Boots to collect a delivery and buy some paracetamol and tissues for OH. He got the first vaccine shot last Saturday and has been feeling cold symptoms since. Boots came to £3.47.
We still have a Waitrose order coming on Sunday and we’ll finalize the cart tonight. There are a few things we brought forward with our Marks shop today.

I work on an annual food budget. In Jan I just spent £20 and that was a sto to a club. Feb was just a couple of small top-ups from the supermarkets, so I was well within budget at the end of Feb having just spent a couple of pounds over 100 out of my annual budget of 3317
So this month I've did a six month order from the fish wholesaler, bought just over 30kg, including salmon, trout, sea bass, sea bream, prawns, dover sole and haddock plus, smoked haddock/cod/mackerel. Cost 264.54. - now all safely in the freezer. We do not have a local fishmonger around here and I find the supermarkets are so expensive so this is my cheapest option and it's so so fresh. just one downside, apart from the smoked fish all the rest have to be gutted so I spent most of yesterday do the gutting, taking off heads and tails and making portions out of the larger fish.
Total spend so far £366.54/£3317, I'm still within budget.
Two more large orders to arrive within the next few days and then I'll be back to just a few pounds per month. I know it's an odd way to shop but it suits me and my mother did exactly the same many moons ago. We had a wash room/dairy (now it would be called a utility room) at the back of the house which she had shelved and I remember a couple of freezers as well. I think freezers were quite rare for families back in the late 50's and early 60's. I remember the shelves being stocked with loads of tins, jars and bottles but I can't remember much about the freezers apart from fish fingers and ice-cream. People used to do a daily shop in those days but we lived quite isolated, no where near the shops so shopping was down to once a week on market day about 10 miles away.6 -
£57.97 for the regular weekly click and collect. I am frustrated by the lack of choice online. I feel that the big supermarkets are holding us to ransom for trying to follow the covid guidelines. It's not as if they are suffering in the pandemic.😡 Definitely going to be saving more when I start shopping in store again.7

Just £8.33 for me this week for lunch bits for the week. Main meals this week all coming from stores.
Total spend this month so far £74.92/£180. Leaves £105.08 for rest of March.7 -

Big shop done, also top up of milk. Spend for month so far, £80.99. Only top ups needed now this month. Did an inventory of the freezers, been meaning to for weeks. We have enough meat and fish in kitchen freezer for at least seventy main meals for all eight of us. Every item in there was either home produced, reduced to clear, or bought with staff discount, so nothing full priced. Quite pleased about that. The other freezer has enough vegetables, (with the fresh we have in) for at least a month. Total for the year so far is £518.79/£2750Frugal Living Challenge 2025.9
