  • That's useful, T-P.
Beading can also be added along the back wall to support the shelves along their full lengths.
  • @Jeepers_Creepers o:)o:)o:)o:)o:) what a saint you are!!

HUGE thank you for sharing your expertise Jeeps, I am very glad of your guidance.

  • The estimate is in and Ikea is so much cheaper!!

Cheaper still would to be to keep my old bookcases and muddle through. but that ain't gonna happen.

Q: can Ikea Gnedby be hacked so the two end pieces (with holes for dowels) can be used as a corner unit, ie fitted perpendicular, ie with 2 long walls rather than with 3?

Eta: trying to look for the same effect as below left (but shallower) as the Billy end pieces seem to be no more!

Gnedby assembly instructions can be found here, p10 of the pdf has the relevant diagram: https://manuall.co.uk/ikea-gnedby-bookcase/

Not really.  It would be a lot of work and I'm not sure how structurally successful it would be.

The shelves are only attached at each side; the back board is decorative. You'd need to move the left hand side of the frame to become back, screw that to the right hand side and then new holes into the back of every shelf to make it structural.  I don't think you could do it perfectly without damaging at least one shelf because the chipboard isn't that strong and the shelves so small.

You'll also need to find the correct colour edging tape elsewhere to finish off the raw left hand sides.

It's doable but I don't think I'd do it.   At that point you're creating something quite different to its original purpose and relying on a cantilever with no guarantee on its strength.

It's safer just to have a side panel.

How much space are you trying to fill? Gnedby is very small, it's CD storage.   There's probably a different solution.

Post the wall dimensions?  Are you trying to finish off at a door?

I'm trying to get book storage wall-to-wall but annoying could do with another 5cm of wall!
Billy Oxberg comes in multiples of 400mm which means I fall just short, so it's a case of hacking up another 2 units or Gnedby if I want to avoid the freestanding look.

I last bought Billy in 2001 and not only has there been a change in colours available, the end units don't seem available. Has IKEA rationalised the range, or does the website only display what can be ordered online. Am hoping someone in the know will save me a trip to Lakeside / Edmonton to investigate.

What is online is everything that is available.  Trends change so Ikea does adjust the offering.

The LHS wall - was hoping to max out this space as there are lights and a newly installed radiator on the RHS wall (replacing the one displaced by the new double doors).

What about a hybrid unit?  Keeps it all symmetrical and the time that would have been spent hacking can just be used to cover the gaps with mdf and then painted?

    Has a really timeless feel.

Brilliant idea, thank you! Obvious when somebody spells it out to me...why do I lack the imagination for such things?
