Don't buy phones from AMAZON, phone insurance does not cover them.

Lots of retailers don’t show the IMEI number on their receipts. Most insurers are aware of this and will accept alternative documentation. This is because in previous decisions the Financial Ombudsman Service have said that it was unfair to declare insurance invalid when the documentation required was never available. For example, a copy of the receipt/invoice/order for the handset plus the standard usage letter from the network ( the service provider will provide an email or letter which details the date the particular IMEI was used on the Network)

Oh, that's great news, let me contact Giffgaff and request the IMEI.

    Thanks 👍
  • Amazon used to have the following message (found on google) when purchasing a mobile phone,
I can no longer locate this message on their website, so it looks like the no longer do this.
This product has an IMEI that uniquely identifies it. When we dispatch your order, we will scan the IMEI and add it to the order history. Where the item is not received, Amazon may register the IMEI with loss and theft databases to help prevent any fraudulent use or reselling of the item. This information is shared in accordance with the Amazon.co.uk Privacy Notice. There is no action required from you and the IMEI will only be used for this purpose.

Don't know what to say anymore, Amazon has been a big disappointment handling this theft, even tried emailing Jeff Bezos, (jeff@amazon.com), got a reply from an employ that handles his inbox and guess what, "return the phone for a refund" they just don't care... I have no money or phone and there's nothing I can do, hopefully my insurance or credit card company will be able to help.

Well I tried, even GiffGaff can't help either, so guess there's no way I can open an insurance claim with a phone bought from Amazon, I tried to use their form https://support2.giffgaff.com/app/ask/Phones/Finding-proof-of-usage/form/ but this requires a claim number, which I can't get, because Aviva won't open a claim without the IMEI number, tried to send a message to GiffGaff and this was their reply (this must be joke):

So don't know what do now, guess I have no choice but to take this massive hit of £700, great start of the year... Thanks Amazon...

Try Amazon again, and depending on response, threaten to take them to court, £700 is a lot to lose.
You could also try posting a review on the Amazon page advertising the phone and post the detail that they won't give you the IMEI number to make a claim.
Try replying to GiffGaff and say about their reply being rather silly, I presume you had to give them the mobile number you used with it, and if they can't/won't give you the detail of the IMEI number, just to tell you whether they have a record of it, and you will get the Police to get the detail. I assume you've reported it to the Police?

That’s poor from GiffGaff , they obviously know what IMEI has been used on their network.

I'll try those steps and yes it's been reported to the police, also I got a reply back from GiffGaff apologising for that message after I kicked off and someone will properly look into my request, so hopefully today I'll finally get the IMEI number, it's been 2 weeks now and this is taking a toll on me, we consumers should not have to go through this when a phone is stolen...

    ...

Oh and in relation to trying again, Amazon must have put me on a list, I'm not getting any email replies now and chat/calls they're very quick to reply with "return the phone for a refund", before they would put me on hold while they would check what was going on, but now they know straight away what to say "return the phone for a refund", so it's even worst now, like I said before, Amazon is not helping at all...
  • Although the invoice doesn't show the IMEI, my order summary does show the serial number (which for my phone, is actually the IMEI number), so a copy of the invoice and a screenshot of the order summary page (oddly the order summary PDF doesn't show that) showing the serial number and order number (so they can easily cross reference the 2 are the same order) should be good enough for any insurance company.
