Incompatible printer

I've just bought a printer for home schooling purposes so I can print off worksheets etc. while my children are learning from home.
I've worked through the set up instructions. Step 1, turn it on. Step 2, install the printer cartridges. Step 3, put paper in. Step 4, connect to the internet. All fell down at step 4 as it's not compabile with my internet connection as it needs 2.4ghz and mine is 5ghz. It said this nowhere on the product description at the retailer I bought it from (I've double checked today), the first i heard of it was when doing the set up at step 4.
I contacted the retailer, who are refusing a refund because I've installed the cartridges. So I now appear to be £50 down. But surely, they didn't set this out as a requirement and I didn't come across this until step 4, following the installation instructions.
What can I do? I feel really upset and ripped off and a bit astounded at their customer service. I'm already struggling to WFH and home school two children, already at my wits end, this was supposed to help me out and make it more manageable. :-(

Seems quite unusual to have the restriction you mention.
Exactly what printer - make and model - are you trying to use?
You might find it useful to ask for help to get your printer working on the Techie Stuff Board.

Most routers are capable of 5GHz & 2.4Ghz. Have a look at your router.3

Turn on the 2.4 band on your router. I use 5ghz for my laptop but my recently bought WiFi printer uses 2.4.1

If you don't know it, who is your internet provider? and did they supply the router?1 -
It's just bogstandard Sky broadband. Yes it's their router.

Hopefully this will work.
Type in 192.168.0.1 in your internet address bar then hit enter.
You will then have to enter your user name and password ( these may be on a label on the router).
Once these have been accepted, scroll down until you find so ething called "wireless" or "wireless settings".
There should be a tick box "synchronise 2.4 and 5Ghz settings" make sure that this is ticked then tap the "apply" button.
I've never had sky internet so the above is simply what I found using Google so may not work.0 -
You are probably having the same issue as with lighbulbs and wifi plug sockets. For initial setup the seting up device needs to be on the same band and the device being setup (usually a phone for my mentioned devices, but hey you could also be using a phone here I guess). With current routers where the 2.4 and 5 bands have the same name it is a right pain to get both devices to connect unless you give the channels different names (which defeats the purpose of devices that can do both moving seemlessly) or temporarily disable the 5 for the setup.Personaly my wifi printer has a usb lead becuase why would i not? Wifi printing is a pain (it will forget it and make you reset it up at times, I know many people for who this has happened). However if wifi printing you must go on over to google and search for "sky router diable 5ghz wifi". (and maybe apologice to the supplier for saying you only had 5ghz wifi, which while possible, you do not with a sky router (and it would only be first gen 5ghz routers like that, made as add ons, becuase they all know many devices are only 2.4 (i'm sure wifi 6 will confuse this even more as it uses 2.4 and 6 ghz bands but I assume it's 2.4 is not the old 2.4 but 2.4 using a different protocol , but since I have no devices I have not looked into it).Good look. Also by way of a tip, next time remember to pay about £150 for a printer though so the ink cartidges do not cost more than the printer when replacing (they have more ink t hat the 5 sheet versions that came with the printer though) (I pay under a fiver for for my 5 different cartidges).0
