Money Moral Dilemma: Should my brother share his lottery winnings?

  • I would say without knowing any of the facts, the winnings are his but is the gf desperately short of money or in debt, if yes, then it would be nice of him to give her some of his winnings
  • I'm not sure why this person has any say in what the brother should do.  A lot depends on whether it's a longstanding, serious relationship, whether he's saving for something eg a holiday, etc.  If it had been me and I'd won the money I'd share it with a significant other on something joint.  If it's not a significant other then I'd take them out for a nice meal or something like that to say 'thanks'.  I think some people's attitudes to their relationships are very sad actually but I guess that's their choice.  I wouldn't want a relationship like that.

My first thought; give her the £500 and ask for a book as a present eg a great one that I read recently "Blackwatertown" a  police novel with a difference, then gently look for the exit door.
Second thought; give her the £500 plus £1 and exit.

I cannot work out why people think that "This week's MoneySaver" was a woman?
Either way, it was none of her business, and none of ours.  A purely personal decision.

    No, it's a present and it's his.

    I hate these presents.

Good point, that might be my fault, because in my family there is one brother and one sister and I do tend to make that assumption if I don't know the actual genders.

This is easy. It was a gift. It's up to him what to do with the gift, just the same as it was up to his girlfriend to give him the scratch card as a gift.

If the scratch card had lost, would she have asked for half of the money to buy it? I'd say not, as it was a gesture of goodwill by giving it as a gift.

A scratchcard is a bit of an odd Christmas present but, either way, it was a gift and the girlfriend would have given up all rights to it, so strictly she's entitled to nothing. As it was the season of goodwill, though, your brother might if he's feeling generous share his winnings with her, though he's not obliged to!

I can't imagine a time when I'd not want to share my good luck with my partner - it'd be for a weekend away, or new TV or other household thing - assuming neither had debts or anything like that. If the relationship was very new and they're not cohabiting, then I'd definitely reconsider the entire relationship as they clearly don't think the same way about money.
    This exactly.

Spending it all on himself would be selfish in the extreme, not an attractive trait in a partner.
  • I don’t think he has to share, but surely any  reasonable person would.
